Butler Carbon Fiber Trombone Review - Part 1 (Expectations)

Dave is making a CF bell to go on my Edwards bass. This is something I have wanted to do for 5 years and the time is finally right for both me and Butler. I have two horns with CF slides (from Spurling) For this particular horn, I am not changing anything except the bell at this stage. I have been concerned that the ergonomics of a big heavy double-Thayer bass trombone would catch up with my shoulder joint. Fortunately I have not had any significant problems yet, but decided it is worth the effort to start lightening up. For years, I have had that horn set up with the heaviest gauge yellow brass bell Edwards makes, so I will be very interested to hear how evident the changes in timbre are. I use that horn primarily for symphonic playing. Based on what I am hearing from your video and others, I think the CF bell will work fine. Unfortunately with the COVID-19 situation, I may not be able to play it in orchestra for another 9 months. But I will certainly try it out in a bone quartet. And it is nice to know that if I ever need an even lighter bass trombone, Butler is making a complete bass trombone.
