Footage taken at Butlins Minehead back in 1991. Includes the monorail and the funfair. Sorry for bad/shakey camera, I was only a teenager at the time!!
Me and my family used to go here back in the 80's and early 90's. Things started to change though in the mid to late 90's and it wasn't as good any more. Thank you for bringing back some memories for me.

Much better how it used to be. Same as Skegness. It was a magical wonderland. Ruined now with those big white tents,and everything torn up that used to be outside. Was nice with the monorails,chairlifts,boating lakes,gardens,out door swimming pools,fountains,lanterns,and coloured buildings. Now looks plain and boring.
Yeah, roll with the times Neal! I liked Butlins from when they had the Skyline Pavilion; 1999 to 2004 was the era that I grew up and knew Butlins, back when they had Noddy.
I guess when holidays abroad became cheap enough for everyone, these resorts saw a massive decline and had to tear down things that were too expensive to run or needed lots of restoration. I'm sure the Old Winsor building was a massive roller skating rink when I last went. Used to spend hours in the Laser Quest arena, great memories as a kid. With British Summers getting hotter and holidays abroad getting very expensive, maybe these resorts will get busy again.
Used to come with my mum and dad early to late 90's (before the overhaul) now visiting with my partner and daughter and the place is unrecognizable. There's very little to do here other than 20 mins of this and that (entertainment wise) in intervals. As a kid there was entertainment all evening.. red coats entertaining... now it's so basic. Sad to see the old nightclub with volcanoes outside went... I always wanted to go there when I was a "grown up"
Went there every year with my Grandparents from the age of 6 until I was about 11.....then went a couple of times with my football team. Can't believe how much it's changed now....

I first went to butlins minehead a year after this was filmed (1992).im so glad you got a little bit of footage of the beachcomber.my favourite memory was supping half a pint of shandy in the beachcomber (i was 14 at the time).the band that played every night in there were called The Manhattans.They were basically just a guitar and bass player playing to a backing track but they were brilliant.Does anyone remember them? Great memories !
I worked on the fair from 1990 to 92 worked the monorail a lot of times I even in one if the morning practice runs crashed the blue one into the other one putting a right dint in the front of the blue one I had an amazing time working there meet some great friends and guasts time of my life
wow thanks for sharing this awesome video. my gran used to live in minehead back in the early to mid 90s i recall goin to this very same butlins, this video brings back some fond memories of seein the big war ships by the beach. had a look on google earth and boy butlins has changed alot since i last went maybe 1994/95'ish.. any one remember the old big white caddilac limo that was parked up near main entrance? i actually had my pic taken next to the limo must digg them out.. butlins as a whole is barely recognisable to me :/ sad but things change..
Went all through 70s and until 85. Then went 99. Everything gone. The outside pool (no indoor fun pool in the in 70s and early 80s) 70s the outside pool was a normal pool. Indoor pool was a normal pool with glass so diners could see swimming. 99 no monorail, chair lifts, no talent competition. No Mother and baby competition. NO DISCO DANCING COMPETITION. No fancy dress competition. The white trousers were now red. They had nothing. Reds and a pub. Crap.
Hi Lee, looking at the date on the video made me realize that you went the exact same week as we always went every year throughout my childhood, we always went for the last week of September and I was 14 at the time in 1991, did you used to go to the teen club back in the day? You know the one they had on the ground floor with a pool table and a wall you could write on as well, well if you did use to go to that club then it is likely we would have met one another way back when, I loved going and was sad to see the monorail go in 96 but it was looking run down by then so would need lots of investment, Anyway thanks for posting as this has been great to show to my daughter who is now 14 and we are going to Butlins in August for a week so it was good she got to see what it is was like when her mum was her age.
Ah the summer(August) of 1991, I was 10 years old. I remember when all that part was being constructed with the water park, monorail. etc in the 80's in the summer of 1986 then went there just over a year later in Sept of 1987 when it was all open. :-) You got any footage from any Theme Parks-either in UK or/and abroad??
Anyone else thinks Butlins has somehow lost it's charm? Nothing like it use to be and WAY OVER PRICED. Not like it use to be #FUNCOASTWORLD #WIZZYWORLD #MONORAIL 🇬🇧
+Sam Bee For anyone who doesn't know - Minehead's was shutdown in 1996 following the two trains crashing into each other. Butlins was later fined £25000 after it emerged that the signalling didn't work and the controller was inexperienced. They probably could've fixed the problems and reopened it again but since it would have to go after the 1998 season anyway as the route went over what is now the Skyline they obviously decided it wasn't worth the bother and so it stayed shut. It was all still in place until 1998, it just didn't run any more. Skeggy's survived the 1999 rebuild due to the route it took but it too presumably would need investment and overhaul to keep it running that they didn't want to do and so it was withdrawn rather than upgraded. The Butlin's of the time saw things like Monorails and Chairlifts as part of the old image they were trying to move away from. Sadly now that they've gone all retro they probably would've kept these features if they were still in place.
Chris Wathen It'd be great if the monorail was brought back; but I would say that the popularity of it declined in 1999 when the skyline was built, and probably because by then, there wasn't much to see.....
@@chriswathen9612 According to a team member who used to work at Butlin's, she said that the monorail at Skegness closed at the end of the 2002 season because it was deemed to be structurally unsafe due to deterioration in the support foundations on the ground.
