Different bits of wood! In the thumbnail you see an MDF one, but I use plywood or all sorts of things. Usually scraps I find for free. The templates I bought from Mia were clear on the instructions. When we download this one, I'm sure it will be there too.

they are half centimeter which is about 1/4 inch

Yes it is wood! Untreated wood works best. If it's oiled or otherwise non-porous, it will stick.
