As a professional procrastinator, I feel I have combed through most of youtube wildlife videos on carnivorous plants and I'm pleasantly surprised not to have heard of this one before. Thanks for teaching me something new Tasha :)

The butterwort's carnivory isn't newly discovered. Charles Darwin studied them in the 19th century. You might be thinking of Triantha occidentalis, a plant that was very recently found to obtain most of its nitrogen through insect digestion.

It is called "butterwort" because its leaves were used like rennet to curdle milk for butter and cheese.

I think adding butterwort to my plant collection would be pretty cool because according to the graph shown, it's native to where I live, and also because sometimes ants come onto my porch and nibble my feet when I'm trying to relax and I don't like buying chemical ant killer because I know it can harm frogs and such that might come onto my yard otherwise Update: being a plant parent is too addicting. I don't have butterwort, but I have all these plants - pathos - basil - bell peppers - Casper pumpkins - cinisio - garlic - holiday cactus - red aloe And I also have strawberry seeds and morning glory seeds and am thinking of adding sweet potatoes and onions to my collection

Great video! Small correction for the leftmost Genlisea plant at 2:14 - that's the infloresence of an Anthurium scherzianum hybrid, not a Genlisea. All members of Lentibulariaceae have zygomorphic (bilaterally symmetrical) flowers borne on a racemose infloresence. Hope that helps!

If there can be passive carnivorous plants, can pasture hedge bushes be considered that because they have spines and sheep often get trapped in it
@dingleshcmarfin6926
@dingleshcmarfin6926 2 года назад
No, there are a few criteria plants need to meet to be carnivorous. They need a lure, a capture method and a way to digest prey. The hedge bushes only catch sheep by coincidence and is similar to getting killed by a falling branch.

It's weird to call Butterwort an "omnivore". I mean, it doesn't eat plants - it's a predator. Yes it also gains energy from sunlight air and water, but that's not usually considered when defining an omnivore. Are there plants that eat plants? Do parasitic plants count like dodder?

When you really start to learn and understand what they are capable of, it's amazing how much more Alive plants really start feel. It's just Wonderful. 😄👍
