6 week old button quail update. Changed of cage and still trying to perfect my enclosure before adding button quails so for now I have to keep them in a cage. Said goodbye to 2 of my button quails.
Another easy way to tame quail is to provide their regular food, but also give them live mealworms as a treat. (Only use the worms as a treat- don’t keep a dish of worms in their cage, so that makes the worms a special treat to look forward to). When you give them the mealworms, make a certain call, such as, “Chick, chick, chick, chick!” At first, make the call and sprinkle the live worms all around and let them eat them. Keep doing that, maybe 4 times a day, generally speaking. Once they really know what the special call means (when you call, they’ll come running to see where you are putting the mealworms). Then begin sprinkling the worms around, but leave your hand among the birds as they look for the worms. Leave a few worms in your palm, too. Soon, when you make the call, they’ll come running and eat the worms out of your hand. Keep doing that for a long time, to really create a habit so the birds associate the human with bringing good things. Some people might be afraid to touch the worms. If so, then scoop up a few worms in a shallow dish and let the birds eat out of the dish while you hold the dish.
A good quality incubator is essential. Buy a Brinsea Mini 2 Advance and you’ll have good success if you follow instructions. I’ve hatched 24 Quail from eggs I bought out of the fridge at an Asian Supermarket! Really!
I was given 10 Button Quail eggs from a bird store I visited recently and just one of them hatched. It’s super tiny and super cute! I hate it when only one hatches though since they don’t have any company. When that happens I hold them as much as possible cupped in my hands. They love it since it’s warm and cozy. This little Button Quail Baby I just hatched is just a few days old and it settles right down and falls asleep in my hands. I now have 20 Button Quail Eggs in two Brinsea Mini ll Advance incubators I bought them from ‘Purely Poultry’ and I just candled them tonight on day 7 and seventeen of them appear to be fertile. They guarantee and 80% fertility rate. (I bought 12 and they sent 20).
Loved your video, Sophie. Where did you get those greats nests? What are they filled with? How did your birds like the two kinds of Walmart seed/sprouts? Does your cage have a wire bottom (like the sides) that you put newspaper over and then bedding? How do you clean the cage and how often? Do you have to relocate the birds to do it? Sorry for all the questions but I just rescued a male and three females and I'm trying to do right by them. Ive raised ornamental pheasants for years but these are very different, certainly in size!
Thank you! I made these nest with glass from the dollar tree and i just glued any type of string on it to make it look like a birds nest, i chose glass because its easier to clean, but it also have a hole at the front and top corner so it still has air flow. Yes i use to keep them in a large tupperware like container but it was hard for me to clean so i ended up switching to a large cage like a rabbit cage. And i change the newspaper once every 3 days if you leave the food in they poop more but if you feed them on a schedule it will be less cleaning. Hope this helps !
I just started raising button quail I ended up hatching 14!!! 😮 anyway one thing I read is because these little things are so active and on the move they need to stay busy with toys and foraging things..if not they will pick on another quail and pluck their feathers from boredom
Do you sell any of ur button quails? If u do, how much for a pair a female and male? I'm interested in buying a pair or if u have any button quails chicks for sell too. Let me know and I'm located in Fresno, CA.
What is that mix (not the vegetables just the regular feed) that you feed the button quails? also how much space for an enclosure would you say is needed for 2 button quails?
How many times do you have to change the bedding I want to have qauil as I believe I work best with birds because they aren't scared of me and I'm not scared of them and I want to care for them and my mom agreed to let me have them
Where can you get your quail eggs to increase your chances of hatching them??? And how come out of let's say 20 of them, five of them make as an example?
Depending on where you get the eggs, but to get the highest percentage of hatchlings try doing a dry hatch, this means you keep the humidity at 15% to 30% until the last 3 days.
The eggs are delicious! I like to have them boiled and put into different dishes because unlike regular egg yolks quail yolks are soft when boiled, so i also enjoy it in hot pot
button quail calls i think its kool..y should try one house that fit all of them,, at night..i think they want to be with each other security and warmth..
