The way that ring broke seems like it was Tungsten which is considered the best thing to make a ring out of since it breaks like that instead of bends like other metals. Makes it safer incase your hand is to get smashed the ring will shatter instead of basically make you lose your finger.

I feel the object permanence thing.. so much so that when I get my own place without roommates, I plan on putting my condiments in the drawers of my fridge (let's be honest here, if you want a condiment, you'll search for it) and my produce in the door so I can see it and not let it all rot cause I forgot :)
