Buy Now, Pay Later did help me furnish my apartment when I moved. I had absolutely no furniture. I got a bed and frame, a computer chair, and a desk. (I work from home) Once that was paid for, I used Affirm for kitchen cabinets and a couch. Paid off everything last year.

The thing is, the apps themselves aren't bad it just people don't put a limit, meaning how much do you want to pay every two weeks. For example 200$ purchase is 50$ every 2 weeks, meaning your limit should be 50$. Sadly, people see the small amounts and forget they add up.

It kind of bothers me when people say "they dont teach financial literacy in school" because... I mean they teach math. People just need to sit down and add up everything they make in a month and subtract your expenses. What is left is what you get to spend. I know its not that easy for everyone and after your 60,000 dollar college education, another 20k in debt doesnt seem like a big deal. but thats another issue
@Jess-gr1qf
@Jess-gr1qf Месяц назад
I agree. I’m a high school teacher (not math), but a student of mine asked me for help on a math problem. It was a word problem about a bank deposit into a savings account and calculating the interest earned over a given period of time. So I do believe that they are learning these types of things at school, perhaps some people don’t pay attention or make the connections once they graduate and have to use these skills in real life.
@TheWolfeDen
@TheWolfeDen Месяц назад
Financial literacy is more than just math. It's also about understanding the language of loans, mortgages, how to write checks, navigating interest rates, budgeting, learning about retirement, 401K, how to open and close banks accounts, the importance of an emergency fund, how to properly use a credit card, recognizing predatory offers and financial scams...the list goes on. I'm 30 and most of my peers have no idea to navigate that sort of thing because no one ever taught them. I had to learn it all the hard way, too.

If i cant save for it, i dont buy it. Ive got 3 saving types. Deposit for a house £80k emergency funding (job loss etc) £12k Luxury spending £2k My deposit grows continually but my emergency fund and lux fund stay the same, maxed at 12k and 2k respectively. if i ever tap into the emergency fund, it will be the first thing to be topped back up when i get back on track. the lux fund is for those moments of weakness where i feel like i need want or deserve something unnecessary believe it or not, an £80k deposit isnt anywhere near enough to get me what i need in london :/ I'm well aware of the fact that im financially better off than most ppl. no debt, and only 60% of my wages goes on rent and bills, and i live frugally enough outside of that to save healthily.

I like using klarna way more than credit cards. You have to put a quarter down payment and make three subsequent biweekly payments interest free. The debt is not lingering, you only have two months to pay it off so that in itself should be a deterrent to overspending

I pay my rent with 1 weeks pay and I save 20-25% of my salary every payday. I have been using afterpay and PayPal pay in 4 for a couple of years and never had a problem. I don’t ever “pay later” on something that I wouldn’t buy outright. I see this being a problem for people that can’t afford what they are buying and don’t know how to budget. Also this would be a nightmare for shopping addicts.

If you want something and it's not an immediate necessity, save up for it! And by the end of it, if you feel like you don't still want that thing and it would've just been an impulse buy, you've just saved yourself extra money. Helps you avoid debt and actually gives you time to think if you actually want something or if it's an impulse buy.
@Mirika01

I mostly use afterpay for school supplies lmao. My parents get me the absolute necessities and everything else is my own money (something like a new backpack, pens, etc.) and I usually put it on my afterpay so overtime, when I get more money throughout the next 2 weeks or so, it gets paid off and I don’t have to worry about not having money to buy other things. Its useful when you use it right :p

How do people even get to this point I’ve done after pay on max 200 dollar purchases And I don’t use it again until I’ve paid the first off I actually like to use them to kind of compartmentalize my purchases that I’m not ready to pay for entirely, but that I don’t want to get mixed up in my credit card bills It helps me keep track on if I’ve recently bought something frivolous and that I shouldn’t do it again. since I’ll forget about it if it’s just on the credit card

Wayfair was my go-to cause the items are very reasonable..Ive always been the type to not want to make payments on my furniture but this time around i did but everything was paid off within less than a yr time. I hate how these types of apps are vilified because if you responsibly, they can be great. I use it kind of as a budgeting tool. instead of paying for something upfront, even though I could, I can split it up and then I can get more things at the same time rather than having to months or however, long. Anything can be bad abused, but saying these apps are inherently bad is like saying overdraft protection is inherently bad.

Growing up struggling with money sucks, yeah, but it taught me something important; being able to recognize an impulsive urge, holding back, and considering the importance of something. Do I actually need this? Will I use this often or buy it then forget? Will this genuinely assist me in my day-to-day life? Etc. The things that could get a 'No' would be things such as random gadgets, the things that could get a 'Meh' would be things such as simple, cheap things (I.E.; I bought a Cinnamoroll key ring w/ 3 keychains that basically cost nothing), the things that would get a 'Yes' would be things such as medical cards (I.E.; "I have ADHD, be patient with me"). I learned it because my mom impulsively bought cheap things and I just thought it was so dumb I promised to never do it 😍👍🏼

Klarna, Afterpay & Zip are not bad if you pay on time & have self control. Their fee is like $3 max and their late fees are $10 max, if you go overboard on those, you have bigger problems 😂

Buy now pay later brings your money from the next month to this month, it is not for poor people, it is not for rich people, it is for reasonable people. The moment you spend all of your next months savings, everything until the third month is just paying bills, do not delude yourself into thinking that you can waste the companies money, run off and they will wipe your record clean. Buy now pay later is very good for emergencies, like you budgeted but you only saw a very important (cheap) item at the last minute, save BNPL for it then.

If you have the funds to pay for something in increments over months, then just save up instead. The issue is people don't have the willpower and willingness to save up for something, they want everything now they dont want to wait. Saving up over time and finally being able to buy that thing you really wanted is so much more rewarding mentally than buying it immediately.

This is layaway and not a new thing. Recycled. When it went out people were putting layaway on everything, not just appliances but clothes too. When walmart came around they did it for a while. Let's me know the time we're in, these things went out with Kmart when I was a kid.

Why do people always say financial literacy is not a part of school? I graduated in 2012 (from a school in ALABAMA), and even we had financial and political literacy classes.🤷🏾‍♀️

It seems pretty uncommon- especially outside of the US where you don’t get as much choice in what you study. I graduated in 2019 and didn’t have a single financial literacy or politics class, the only thing we learnt was how to write a check- which is something that barely gets used anymore. My friends were 18 and didn’t know what a credit score was.

If I can afford to pay for something right now, then I will. However, if I see something that I want, then I will budget cut everything else and save up for that thing. After that, I'll go back to saving up for the long-term things. I don't know why, but it feels so good to be putting down money for something you want and then at end being able to say "here, I'd like to purchase this item please" all cash or card.

one thing cardi b said is so true “if you can’t buy 2-3 of that item don’t get it” buy now pay later can be good if you’re really struggling but only if you’re certain you are able to pay it back on time

You can’t be trying to go on luxury vacations while not having luxury money. You don’t need to go on a trip to the Bahamas, you want to go there. If you want a vacation that badly drive a couple hours out to a nice hotel and get the same exact experience for cheaper while not being in debt lol

I’m a bit late to this video, but I just wanted to say that I am going into my sophomore year, and I actually have two classes related to finances! The first one is Economics, Social Studies, and Advanced Studies (EC SOC ST ADV STU 1), and the other class is Personal Financial Literacy. I'm thankful that these classes are being offered to help students manage and understand their money more effectively! :3!

I started using my 401(a) as my credit line for large purchases/purchase amounts. The interest is low and goes back towards my retirement. I’ve greatly increased my retirement savings doing this and still get to make large purchases.

I was always told if you can't pay for it right now you can't afford to put it on a credit card. A lot of people buy things they don't need. Now if I was told they are using Afterpay and Klarana for groceries that is another story but Sephora hauls? Nah, you don't need that.

Fr tho my class cant even take 1 minute to listen to my teacher. My class also made a teacher quit. I just hate it bc the main offender is a very nice teachers son.He thinks everything will be fine.(I go to a priv school n it's catholic) The teachers are very understanding but they do little to NOTHING to stop bullying. The main offender when he is in high-school this is not bout to fly.He WILL GET JUMPED.(He is really small in weight n height) He also made a kid leave the school bc he was bullied cuz of his weight,on the topic of weight he called a girl in my class fat.😬 Can anyone give me advice on how to get him to stop ? Thanks :)

What I don't get is, why if you can't afford the 1-2K a vacation (which is understandable) but you could afford to pay 100-200 a month for the next 1-2 years, why not just put aside that 100-200 a month and go once you've saved it?

I only use buy now, pay later for concert tickets. I don't use it often because I only got to expensive concerts (150+) maybe 3 times a year. One I use it I add it into my budget for the next month or so until it's paid off. That's how you should use those apps. I only allow myself to have 2 or 3 ongoing purchases at a time, if that.
