O-H-I-O Porter greetings.🇺🇸 Good morning. I’ve never been much of an IH moving van guy, but I do like the DT466 engine. Most vans like that have been so abused from my experience, unless you get it fairly new. And it doesn’t have the DEF! Wow! I would say that this truck would be worth rebuilding, but check it out, as I know you probably will, then see what you will do afterwards.🧐 I can say that I learned something new today about the “Autoshift” transmissions. I love air brakes on a truck & usually a 6 speed transmission or so, but an automatic (Allison) isn’t bad either. I was shocked that you didn’t tow it yourself, but it IS good to have someone who can tow something when you need that help. Good towing services are hard to come by these days. I’m learning that more and more.😠 I love a semi with a 5th wheel wrecker installed on it. You didn’t show that truck though. Does this cab have airbags under it? The truck overall looks pretty nice…good find! This truck will be interesting to watch! Have a great one my friend! Blessings! 🥰😎✌️
Looks like a good buy J.C. Too bad the engine more than likely destroyed, but it’s got a lot of potential. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a transmission like that before and I can see why truckers stick with the manual trans. A whole less that can go wrong👍. Take care
Dear J.C. Smith projects family. 👍👌👏 Congrats for another great purchase. I really hope that the engine is repairable because it's a way too nice and clean truck to be parted out. But whatever you decide to do, I will watch it anyway. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you (including the reconvalescent dog).
Once you sell the box off of it the cab and frame looks really good. Whatever you decide to do I’ll be glad to watch it. I enjoy watching your channel JC. Have a Blessed One Sir.
My current Eaton uses high speed screw jack to activate the clutch. Easton also changed length of housing so wasn't as easy to swap. Looks like nice parts
Your tow company friends’ “bitsa” wrecker is a great piece of kit 🙂 Autoshift (automated manual) transmissions are pretty much de rigeur here in the UK; an effect of the decreasing population of drivers and difficulty of attracting new ones, so new trucks here tend to be higher spec than a few years ago in an attempt to pamper and hence retain the good guys. More modern versions have full automatic operation of a (nearly) standard-type clutch in addition to automated shifting so they are also more fuel-efficient than torque-converter transmissions; in fact many manufacturers now claim that they are more fuel-efficient than a competent driver in a manual truck. Not sure about that one myself, but I guess we’re stuck with them 🙂
When I was driving coach buses, we took delivery of the Hybrid Twins, which were 2012 Internationals with the Maxxforce and six speed Eaton Fuller autoshift. The cab was cramped, lots of gauges for the hybrid functions, and the EF shifts like a manual. I wasn't impressed with the unrefined engine. One of them went back and forth to the dealer for engine warranty work. I liked the Cummins/Allison setup in my bus better. Can't go wrong with an ex Penske truck. Let's see what happens with this gem.
That white truck in the of your shop may have some good donor parts, and a good used DT can not be to hard to find. Fix this truck, I know you have the skills, and determination.
the truck in the back of my shop is a international 8600. some parts interchange with the 4300. however, that trucks parts have showed up and it can be put together.
Sure is a pretty clean truck, looks to have been decently cared for. That International is pretty much rust free compared to what we're used to. Tough call, fix or parts? I'd say it depends on how good or bad the engine is, then of course there's that oddball transmission. Maybe if you had a rotted out International with a dt466 and more desirable transmission? It's certainly clean enough it'd be worth doing.
@@j.c.smithprojects my thoughts exactly, I remember it's somewhat rusty and not as high a gvwr. This yellow truck would make a great rollback tow truck
Ole Jeff!! We had a bunch of internationals that used to be some sort of route truck like a milk delivery because it had a printer button on the dash, but they had those Eaton auto shift transmissions. They made them into 2,000gal water trucks and they were horrible to load and operate. Driving it up the dovetail on my trailer, if you so much as let off the throttle the stupid thing would roll back off the truck. I’ll have to say the new autoshift trucks with the hill assist work much better.
Being its a non CDL pre-emissions truck it may be worth repairing and selling. It would make a great expedite truck and you are in s region where there are many expediters.
Could see this made into a smaller dump truck. Be good for some landscape company that doesn’t want its guys trying to shift gears and blowing clutches and transmissions
On something like this would it be worth the time to drain all the oil and coolant out and fill it back up with just new oil? So you could hear the engine run and see how much oil pressure it has.
the damage is done. i didnt have a problem trying to start it with the engine oil in it. no need to create another almost 7 gallons of contaminated oil to get rid of.
its been a while sense iv messed with a 466 does that have a gear driven coolant pump. i saw a cat milkshake the oil like that when the water pump went out and the weep hole was plugged up so it pushed coolant into the crank case threw the water pump seal.
i have another dt466 with an allison 2200. i will likely yank both the engine and trans from this and put in the other set up. probably sell as good cores
