Odd. I've had mine 13 years. Only now I've any real issue which is a dead starter motor, which will be fixed next week. As for fuel consumption it was when I last checked about 32mpg. Compare that to the Capri 2.8i I used to have (21mpg) the Sierra 2.9 XR4X4 (20mpg) both with less power it doesn't seem that bad to me.
I'd love an st170. I have a 1.6 with 36k on it. These things are so great to drive and easy to live with. Great visibility and roomy. The perfect hatch.
Rough idling could/will be a split vacuum hose, common on these, I had one go right on an elbow, made it idle like a dog, it was one that connects on the back of the valve cover IIRC, its buried down the back! IMRC box goes bad on these and will chuck a code, its an easyish fix, its bolted to the bulkhead with a cable that runs to the intake, and its usually just the copper spring contact thing in the box gets dirty, PCB needs desoldering out of the unit to get to it. I've got a genuine st170 gear knob sat around, yours if you want it
Link to that restoration kit please if you wouldn't mint,I work in a garage and get fed up using cutting compound year after year. That's a great result. Always wanted a st170
this is a keeper throw some money at it and make it great again. i have had one for the past 14 years and tbh i will never sell it love it then and sill love it know love the headlight resto you had done on it i could do with doing that on mine as this is a problem with focus headlights. check to see if the boot is leaking as the boot vents tend to go and also around the panel joins/seams behind the bumper oh and get rid of that stupid air filter and put it back to oem
People who think a hatchback with 170bhp is slow mustn't know how to drive. Probably floor it on 6th at 2,000 revs expecting a turbo to pull them out of their skilless driving habit.
They're still better to drive than any new car, I have a new focus and a low mileage mk1. It's far better to drive. Taught chasiis, loads of steering feel and handles brilliantky. Golf's feel like porridge when you drive them. No feel.
I've always found the ST fast enough in the real world, my other car is a Hawkeye Impreza WRX STI (with a slightly modified engine) . I had mine run on Rick Savage's dyno a few years ago apart from a K&N in a standard intake system it was and still is stock, I was running it on Supermarket fuel (these days it runs on super unleaded) it made 169.1.
Jamie, forget saving it. Youve just saved a fortune on parts. Grab a south African MK1 escort and engine and brake swop. Happy days. Ps im so jealous. Lol
sorry mate aint with you on that as to many st170s have surcome tothe graveyard in the sky for being used for the engines thats why their aint many left
I'm on my fourth (I think). When I went to change the first one it looked like it had at least been out , I'm now on my third reconned unit. However the car went through the MOT with it inoperative on emissions and I for one can't perceive any difference between it working and not working. Obviously now there is a fail on warning lights. But I suppose it could be the case of disconnecting it until an MOT... Basically a RC model car electric motor connected to a wire which moves after a certain number of revs. P1518 is the code on my scanner.
@@madtoppyou can fix it yourself for about £10 if you have am afternoon and a soldering iron search on youtube for a how to I have fixed mine 3 times now.
@@madtopp You can fix it for about £10 with a soldering iron and a free afternoon. Search youtube for a how to, it could be the return spring, the transistor, a diode, the copper contact is dirty, the cable is dry and binding or a combination of these that is causing the problems. I've done mine 3 times now different problem each time. If you don't fix it you loose all low end torque it will run rough and your fuel milage will be even more tragic than it normally is.
@@17millionfuckoffs i did try and fixing the last one but that one was unfixable so the new one had to be brought i would not like to think how much one is from ford now
