I would not ship him the plug back, unless you document the conversation and have his word that he will get back with you with a real reason why this happened. They will bury your issue, and never let you know what happens. And your fault you used a cheap plug as well. It is a Viper, not a neon.

That spark plug happened to me on my 2002 Sequoia. It has coil on plug. It does NOT run. The spark ignites the fuel and then comes up out of the plug home and starts a fire almost immediately with the rubber boot attached from the coil. I immediately pulled over and saw the melted coil. Pulled the coil out and the ceramic inner came with it. 1 plug and 1 coil later, and she was all good again.

This truck will probably run for years problem free with all the repairs you have done to it. I did similar with a Toyota van that I was going to make into a camper. I had the engine out several times as i converted it to diesel, changing out the gear box and diff as well. Breaks, clutch, suspension and steering also got big overhauls. I spent all my spare time for a whole summer on it, late nights and weekends. Then reached the point I couldn't even stand to look at it, and I sold it without fitting it out as a camper as I had planned. The guy who bought it told me years later that he still had it, and it had always run great for him with no issues.

I've owned several corvettes and anyone that has ever chaged the plugs on a c4 knows the passenger side rear plug is a pita to get a socket on. I once broke a spark plug apart exactly like that by having a side load bind on the plug while trying to remove it. the socket/ ratchet gets pushed sideways and sometimes the pressure on the plug is enough to separate it but not break the glass. I'm betting you did the same since your plug was the hardest to get to as well.

HA! I know the feeling about the dodge money pit. 2 years ago my wife kept telling me to get a new truck. My 2007 Ram was at the disposable time. The prices of new vehicles were getting more than my first house price. I agreed to keep my 2007. Bad choice! I have done so much work to the truck. Even had to do the cam change. The only thing left is suspension. Good thing I am able to do the work myself. All in all, huge money pit. The viper truck is bad ass. Glad to see you got it going .

Years ago I had 2 Champion plugs do exactly the same thing. One was in a boosted 4 cylinder engine I had. Due to the boost, I didn't think too much about a plug failing in that manor. Then a few years later, my boat did the same thing. The boat engine was a N/A 3.0 Iron Duke inboard. Both failed plug instances resulted in tows. I figured Champion would have resolved that issue by now. Maybe they actually have and those plugs were just old stock. Who knows. My failures were many years ago now. So I find it extremely strange that I am see this problem still in 2024. Needless to say, I haven't used Champion piugs since my second failure.

When I was young I decided to bring my Opel to be serviced at a dealer. Normally I NEVER do that. After three days I lost the ignition on one cylinder. The brand new Champion plug died within three days. I thought I might have a crucial engine failure. The dealer replaced the plugs and it was fine. Since then I keep the replaced plugs in my trunk. You never know if this will happen again far from any settlement. People are laughing at me, but I am rather safe than sorry. By the way: I also keep used ignition cables in the trunk. Many times I had critters eat those cables over night. At least you are not stranded when this happens again.

If the coil back was bolted down and the spark plug separated either the compression or the ignition would blow the coil off the engine. You would have a compressed fireball and the easiest path would be though that spark plug.

I've tried that it happened, it was on an Opel where it was an ignition coil on top of the spark plug that was screwed on. it was shot up the coil and where the coil was screwed on the plastic broke when the coil was ignited, so the same thing happened as with the ram here, only the ceramic rest of the spark plug was just hanging out in the wire to the coil. so if there is a loose coil or just turn on the wire, they do the same, it all shoots out. :-)
