I plan on buying land in 2 years, set up a small house and getting me a few cows for milk and to get offspring for meat. I am starting my research a little early so I have time to learn as much as possible. Hopefully your channel is still active. Great video thanks for all the information
We are still active, and if you have a question please feel free to ask. We will do our best to answer it and if we don't know the answer, we should be able to point you in the direction of somebody who does. Thanks for watching
Do you have a video braking down cost to run a ranch? Feed, utilities, vet, fence repair, equipment repair, etc? Obviously it's not going to be the same for everyone but maybe a rough estimate as to when things happen. Everyone knows about a few expenses but like all jobs theres always unaccounted expenses that most people dont know about.
Hey y’all. Just wanted to say hello and thank you for info. Brother is getting a couple cows and I’m helping with research. Hope alls well with everyone. ~Lisa
Without a blood test there is no way. The best corse of action is if.you don't trust them don't buy from them. But if you are stuck then just milk them for 45 days and dump the milk or give.it.to other livestock. Then you should be ok
Jeff that is a common problem with new dairy cows, it can be cause by stress from being at a new place and the stress from a different routine. You are new to her just like she is new to you. She will relax in a short time, and this issue will go away.
Depends on what you want them For some cows naturally produce more cream, some also like the Holstein produce a protein A1 which is histidine meaning it can induce allergies versus a jersey which generally carry A2 protein which is non histidine. So yes breed matters depending on your preference, need, region, and even pasture status some breeds do better completely grass fed than most cow breeds others you have to grain supplement which I do not agree with because of the health issues that come with grain fed dairy cows. it's like dogs you would never get a German shepherd and think it's going to be a livestock guardian dog it wasn't bred for that purpose. chickens are another example certain breeds of chicken do better in heat climates than cold and vice versa
Great you will enjoy it. They are a lot of work but the reward makes all that work worth it . Thanks for watching . Hope you smashed that subscribe button and rang the bell so you can catch future videos.
That is a hard question to answer because there are so many variables. Is this her first calf. Are you milking her at the present time. How much grass does she have access to . Are you supplementing her with any feed? Sorry I can't give you a straight answer, another variable is the breed, a Jersey won't eat as.much as a Holstein. I would let her have free access to a round bail and she will take what she wants. Thanks for watching hope you hit that subscribe button and rang the bell. What type of cow do you have right now and is this your first one?
@@bigbearhomestead Thanks no cow yet still studying about it its all new to me. Ive read a acre and a half of land of grass is good enough for a pregnant mother is that true? i guess a dairy cow couldnt live off of hay and feed alone your saying needs grass to eh?.How much should you expect to spend a month on one cow growing up from a very young age a baby one?. Thanks!
@Mathew Javis, that depends on the quality of your pasture. If you have great pasture grass with a good balance of a salad bar. Then you could actually get away with less. The one thing you keep saying is just one cow. It has been our experience that if you only have one cow it will be a huge headache. Your question about how much it would cost to feed one cow for a month. That is a question I can't answer for you because of variables and the differences in cost of living between our areas. I can share this if you have good pasture grass and are able to do intense grazing, then your cost of feed will go way down. 😉
@@bigbearhomestead So say you have fully great solid grass your saying you could get away with less then a acre and a half of land? how much land could you get away with?. Wait wouldnt it be easier to just have one milk cow? less work wouldnt it be? sorry are you saying one cow would be harder to deal with? why is that?. Whats the best options for there salad bar?
Great food for thought. I was raised around a dairy, but was too young to know the ins and outs of buying and/or selling of them. That was back in the day when a kid's presence was limited. Thanks for this series!!!
Not anymore she already had the calf about a year ago, she wasn't pregnant in this video yet but shortly after she did get bred. Unfortunately this daisy died about a month ago she was 17 years old. Thanks for watching hope you hit that subscribe button.
