I come across rusted dump trailers regularly. It's a matter of poor designs that allow rust to easily form. In this video, I talk about the flaws, what I do to work through them, and patch up a rusted dump trailer. This is part 1 of 2. The second video will finish up the repair work, and do some needed maintenance on the bearings.

Adding the piece on the angle is an amazing idea! Im getting ready to fix my dads old lawn mower dump trailer. Its 20 years old and is just so much nicer than the new stuff. I bought i new one to replace it with and im disappointed with it. So im cutting the metal i need from the new trailer and welding it into the old trailer. Im going to take the 45 angle and use it to get another 20 years of work from this trailer!!! Thank you!

Jesus, that CAM is something of a rot-box... looks like he was hauling Salt. You're a better man than i am taking on a job like that. Yikes, I see what you mean.. that's way poor box construction. Usually they just use one sheet and brake it at the bottom-to-side.. Talk about Neglect. Broom, hose out, and put the dump up when not in use! It's funny, when you first showed those flat strips to fix it with, i immediately thought, "weld them up @ 45's". Then you went ahead and said it 👍 If guys can't afford to fix it right, then why can't they afford the preventative maintenance?? 🤔

Can I say that was a realy good video on fixing g a worn out Dump trailer. But good to learn great ideas to think about. I know I'm rambling on too, but my favorite part Is what you said in tge video... "In a perfect world, i would say to do it this way. But, this isn't a perfect world and No body is Perfect!" THAT MY FRIEND WAS A PERFECT POINT TO REMIND US ALL AS EACH OF US TAKE IN SOME OF WHAT YOU SHOW US IN YOUR VIDEO. THANKYOU, DAVID fromAZ. .

Thank you for your comment! Even if I only help one person with their trailer, I still happy to know someone appreciates my knowledge and experience.

Man some 2 in angle and some sheet would have been perfect 3/16 would have been more than thick enough

That would be great except the bed wasn't straight so I had to make slight adjustments as I went along. If the bed was in better shape, angle would have been much easier

I don't recall exactly, but it was probably 2k or so. Maybe a little more.

I'm getting ready to do a mason dump. Lots of bigger holes and bumps from guys digging out of the bed and scraping it either the backhoe and excavator. Should I cut out all of the peices of metal sticking up, weld a plate in and then go over top or just cut out the whole bottom or just bang it down and throw in new sheet steel? Thinking of going with 10ga

Depends how long you are gonna keep it and what you use it for. If it's a good truck, I'd cut out the whole floor. In all honesty, it will be easier to Weld the new steel onto the cross members vs the rusty old floor. 10 ga / 1/8" should be fine as that is what is probably on there now. If you haul a lot of broken concrete or large rock, you may consider going even heavier such as 3/16 to keep the bed from denting so easily. You can email me @ formidablefab@gmail.com if you want to discuss it more. Thanks for watching!

@Formidable Fabrications thank you! We do lots of concrete, blacktop and sone/gravel work. I think I'm gonna go with 10 gague. Seems to be heavier duty and only 40 bucks more. I think I might wind up cutting out the whole floor. Might be the better option like you said. Thanks for the reply! Will email if I have any more questions

What guage steel is the corner pieces that you cut and welded in?

They were 11 ga (1/8") pieces. I think the original steel was 12 or 14.
