swales, ponds, food forest, ground cover, terracing, etc. all great things to help build up the local water table, storing water between seasons. using the septic tank as a natural gas generating system, compressing it into a second tank, to be burning in a ng generator, should help with power beyond solar limitations. making wood gas, and pyrolysis systems, means more fuel options, and handy side products. the charcoal can be used to filter water, before being used in the soil as a fertilizer. the water from the aquaponics could be used to help boost compost tea microbes, for better crop yields. so much room, for so many toys to play with. each toy, has so much value.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Год назад
Would like to play with a lot of those ideas. 👍 We will be sitting back & observing how the different systems interact for a while before we pull the trigger on any major developments though.

We moved from Ipswich almost 18 months ago, 2.5 acres in Central Qld; 1hr to Rockhampton & 2hr to Bundy. Best thing we have done; 15 mins from nearest town & work, got some sheep & chickens now, put in a 13.26kwh system (saving for batteries). Just been doing fencing & clearing deadfall trees mainly. 100k of rain water+ septic.

Hey Rob, I am so pleased to hear this update. I first messaged you almost ten years ago, it was about Aquaponics but I was messaging you from my off grid farm. You will thrive on your homestead and you will never look back. As for feeding cattle or your animals, grow Barley grass from seed and harvest every 7 days, depending on grain prices it could be an a option for you. God bless mate
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Год назад
Hi mate & thanks for the tip. I've sprouted wheat with the aquaponics before but have seen cattle do well on barley too. Only used the wheat due to having infested grain we weer using to make flour. Whereabouts is you farm?
@breaknfaces
@breaknfaces Год назад
@@RobsAquaponics It is in Northern NSW, in a place called Tabulam or where I'm in Pretty Gully, good prices around there for land as I'm sure up your way too. As for the fodder it's a go especially if you can replenish your own grain stocks & boiled barley does well with pigs too. Are you going a little bigger when you get settled on your homestead with aquaponics?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Год назад

Fab news, Rob & Bianca! I understand your concern regarding the wild lantanas. During our upbringing, my siblings and I spent a considerable amount of time uprooting them from our different plantations. Us kids used to seek refuge under the lantanas for fun, but we were fortunate to be thin and agile back then, as the prickly nature of this plant can give you a mean scratch. I like the last property but I see how the wet season could be problematic. Good luck finding your new farm. :)

@@RobsAquaponics Yes, they dont like it and went about going after it worldwide. Gets in the way of big ag farming patent products. Monsanto, Dupont, the usual suspects. They used to pay farmers to grow it here in the states before big ag and those families went after it to tear it out. Same ones that invested in getting rid of a great many things for their own product lines to take precedent. Sadly, during the time they used it all yields were at their highest levels ever, and all issues with the petroleum based fertilizers and bug and weed killers have degraded all yields since. It has a long history to go through, but yes, I highly recommend it especially given the ongoing weather issues and your grow zone. Cheers.

Did you guys come across the term - earth tank? I was taught that a farm dam is not a dam because it doesn't block a river, dams block rivers. I was told it's called an earth tank? Or just a tank?. On aviation maps, small ponds of water are labelled as tanks. On farm tours. What a great idea!. On farm stays even better! What about some on farm merch as well? Good luck guys! Sounds awesome!
@rw-xf4cb

just called dam here. ponds if you have fish and farming them (or a farmer being derogatory about someone else's dam being smaller than theirs lol, some are blocked off dry water ways as cutting off a river is problematic with the government and authorities for many reasons. You can have earth tanks or ring tanks they're seen on very big farms (almost stations) where they need to store many millions of liters of water for cotton usually. Cubby Station used to be a huge one with multi-mega liter dams/tanks.

Don't underestimate medical facilities! Being close to them or public transport (rail/bus) to them is a must when getting older! There is no real substantial medical facilities especially Heart based beyond Sunshine Coast, the likes of Bundaberg/Gympie etc. just don't have the capacity in many respects sadly. I bought a little further north and my predicament a few years ago was glad I didn't buy too far away from there (still a nuisance but better then say Gin Gin/Childers). From my experience its worth looking at a lot of places don't listen too much to the sales guy they're there for commissions (talk to the locals in feed shop owners etc.). Also Lantana, Giant Rats Tail grass and a million other weeds are everywhere they're a common place and impossible to eradicate these days - councils have given up on Lantana now. Be wary of needing a way to sell a lot of properties in more remote areas are very difficult to sell. Could say Covid was a god send for lot of people trying to sell in the bush with city folk trying to get away from congestion but all that's changing again as the economy is faltering. NBN is good and now Starlink is available which is great and some jobs can be remote usually white collar ones. Also on the glamping front make sure the council is into it, some councils it takes forever to get approvals Tim Thompson talked about it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-InJ8n4cus1o.html also Water, Water, Water 20KL isn't a lot of water I see many water trucks moving up and down the road in the dry season as small little properties only have 1 or 2 - 5000G tanks. Seen some on Facebook show off with their single galaxy 100KL tanks but I always prefer the security of multiple tanks - if you get a leak or leave a tap on it can only drain one tank the others are closed off and full and you balance them out manually with your water grid approach (you can never have enough water!).
