If you're in the market for a new rig what sort of second hand radio can you get for about £1000-1200? I compare my recently acquired 2nd hand Ft1000MP to a modern FT710 which costs about the same........
I really like my SDR rig but i won't give up my old superhet rigs. I have two fantastic old Kenwood TS-850s rigs ,talk about morse machines! I have all the mechanical filters in one of them, and they still hold their own against modern rigs...
Nice clean example. Having control knobs / buttons for each function rather than having to select menu items is so much better in my opinion. It will be interesting to see how you find the mkV compared to the K3S on CW which is an excellent CW rig. Earlier FT-1000MPs were notorious for producing key clicks but hopefully the mkV was improved.
The problem with a twenty year old rig is could you get a replacement display or other dedicated component if it failed? To answer your question, I have been very impressed with my new FT710, which is now down to about £800 new. The waterfall on an external monitor is stunning.
You've payed top dollar for the Mk5. It would need to be fully loaded with Collins filters and in as new condition plus you would really need to want one at that money.. . Iv just bought a 6 months old FTDX10 with warranty for £1000 so there are plenty of relatively young radios for the money you've shelved out.. Anyway the Mk5 is still a quality rig..
I know someone who bought a second hand Yaesu FT-920 for £450, during lock down. The 'shuttle' mechanism is strange to use at first, for speedy VFO change.
Hello Justin. I regret selling my 1000mp and the mkV also the mk V field. (I also had the 2000) Stunning radio's Did notice you had fast agc selected for ssb instead of slow (easier on the ears lol). I found best results with a fair bit of attenuation in. As you say very quiet compaired to other hf txrx's. Worked well on AM as long as you keep carrier to 25% of pep (surprisngly good audio). Have fun with it... really nice radio, congrats.. My main radio now is a Anan 8000 DLE SDR transceiver... it ties up a computer but would never look back again. Have fond memories of the 1000mp. :-)
i have just bought a ham international jumbo and am having a little trouble getting it to pick up local people i dont know if its because of where or not a lot of people around can you give me some advice
