I have a 1998 SL500 since 2004 from Palm Springs, CA . This last year (here in southern sunny California) just began some age related issues & probably heat deterioration . I had to replace water pump, a/c & fix transmission leak, still need to replace the motor mounts. However, this car starts every day and I don't have to pay for a new car...I love my old Mercedes and it still looks great!

I have owned a 1999 SL320 for 2 years. The ECU that controlled the roof failed and I had to buy a reconditioned unit that is guaranteed for life. The hydraulic pump in the trunk seized through non use in winter when I had the panoramic roof on. I freed it with a couple of hits from a large wrench. I have been told to release the hard top from time to time when in place or run the roll bar that is operated off the same pump once or twice a month to keep the pump lubricated. My trunk leaked through a broken seal and the drain plug was blocked so the spare wheel well filled up and that may have contributed to the hydraulic pump problems! Always check for leaks in the trunk and make sure the drain plug is clear just in case! There is a small oil leak from the timing chain bell housing that stains the front of the engine block. This is a common SL design fault, no actual liquid oil escapes it seems to be just fumes that condensates on the block and the engine oil level never falls. Just pressure wash the block and drip tray from time to time and forget about it. The trim tabs around the sun visors always crack and are a pain to refit. The sun visor comes off the arm if you rotate it and find the right spot before you pull it as hard as you dare to get it off the arm to allow for the removal and replacement of the tabs that fit over the end of the arm. Never over tighten the locating screws because the same thing will happen again. It would appear that the body frames on some cars get out of square and tightening the screws on these tabs causes too much tension on the plastic. If you can only see part of the locating hole in the windscreen frame through the trim tab screw hole just use a thinner screw to locate it. The thin glove box in the dash does not always open fully when the release button is pressed. To rectify this loosen the two screws at the back of the compartment and re-position the box and leave the screws a little loose - sounds nuts but it works. Always water proof the soft top with a good product every two years making sure you get product into the seams around the rear view windows. That's my experience folks and despite the aggravation of these minor maintenance issues my car remains the best I have ever had. I drive it sparingly and hope to pass it on to my kids when the time comes. They are great cars and currently about as cheap as they will ever be - buy well!

Here the list of the problems with my 1999 sl500 104.214mi front hydraulic cylinder soft top leak trunk high pressure struts lost pressure front shock struts mounts supports craked (was critical dangerous) trunk lock failed sun visor pivot cracked (both) interior dome ligth cracked (bad quality plastic) climate control center vents don't open driver side turn signal holder lock broke floor mats desintegrations by the black cover sponge I hope don't get more defects in this pretty boy was my dream car, now i been expend lots of money fixing all this factory problems. i still love it.
@MrSkinnn
@MrSkinnn 5 лет назад
An easy and cheap fix for the floor mats is to scrape off any loose black rubber from the underside and then paint it with a liquid black rubber product like FlexSeal. For about $5 of the product it make the 2 mats like new. Do NOT buy the spray can, it will take multiple cans and cost too much, might as well spend the $90 for new mats. Get the small can of liquid and a brush and you will have some left over.

Love this car. I traded my old 1992 Jeep Wrangler with 150k miles for a 1999 SL500 with only 76k miles a few months ago. I think it was the best trade I ever did. The SL is heavy and solid. The only thing is brakes are squealing like a pig. I checked the pads and they have only 35% wear. I can't get rid of the squeal.

The 1993-1994 & 1995 had the deteriorating insulation wiring issues that started with the change to sequential LH Jectronic fuel injection system in late 1992 for the 1993 models. This was when the wiring loom was changed. The 1990-1991 & 1992 have K/KE-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection and these are the 500 SL's people are collecting. They were mostly hand built. After 1992 the engineer could no longer be heard over the hysteria of cost cutting, increased profit and productivity. The fate was sealed for this wonderful Le Man bread engine. The ensuing cost cutting inevitably lead to the demise of the quality of the items attached to the engine, although the core is very much still there. The later cars were massed produced with robots using torx fasteners. The early cars have the purity of the original engineering design before the cars were cheapened by the bean counters. You are still able to work on them. The '90-92 models do have the standard strut and shock suspensions. The '93 and later SL's brought electronic controlled suspensions, the electronic dashboard gauges. I do not want to deal with 30 year computers to keep the car running. The '93-95 engine wiring loom insulation was changed and deteriorates from heat and can short out everything including your drive by wire throttle aka electronic throttle actuator. The 90-92 have aluminum oil supply tubes to lubricate the cams. The '93 and later cars have plastic oil feed tubes that break or crack from heat over time causing loss of the oil supply to the overhead cams, oops!

One other thing - make sure it comes with a working spare IR key\fob. Mercedes don't supply them anymore. If you lose ur one and only key fob, or it fails, and the immobiliser has been activated you are left with a very expensive paperweight!!

You want to buy a car from someone who can afford the car, who can pay for the maintenance and repairs that start cropping up after 125,000 miles. I found a car where the guy had skipped on a ,oh of little stuff, like shocks, A/C, etc. but everything major had been addressed. I got the car for about $4500 and put $5600 into upgrading the power top and front suspension/steering. And for $10,000 I’m driving a 500SL with 135,000 miles that drives like a car with 60,000 miles on it. It’s FAST! Effortless thrust on demand. Fun to drive, handles incredibly, feels solid as granite, and saved my ass the day I put it through supernatural handling commands to avoid a head on collision with some teenage punk texting. Those kind of characteristics in an emergency are why millions of people worldwide trust their lives to Mercedes-Benz.

Check the roof hydraulics by operating roof and check for leaks, if one ram is leaking, you will probably need to fix more of them, as the pressure will be increased, and more of them tend to leak. There are 11 hydraulic rams in all, we just overhauled 6 of them ( 2 at a time) and it seems ok!

Dean Marshall I have a 300 SL and the roof cylinders are leaking, I am currently putting the top up and down manually, would you be willing to tell me which cylinders you replaced and where you sourced them. It would help me a lot, I can’t afford have a shop do it unfortunately,but I am reasonably comfortable going for it if I had a little more information.
