My website and articles www.chasinglatitudes.com
Welcome to Chasing Latitudes! Have you ever imagined the smell of the ocean air as your boat crashes through the waves? The freedom that comes from casting off the bow lines and heading out to sea to explore new places you can’t reach by car or airplane? Then this channel is for you.
You will not see white sand beaches here, restaurant reviews, beach parties, selfies or Japanese knives. What you will find is factual information based on decades of sailing experience.
My channel is specifically meant for one thing and one thing only, to help YOU find your new to you fancy-dancy yacht of your dreams and get on the water in the fastest, most time efficient manner.
Don’t get caught up in looking at old boats! I focus on mostly newer vessels, built in 2000 or later because I want you to spend as much of your time as possible sailing, not practicing your restoration skills on an old boat attempting to bring it to its former glory.
You want to take advantage of the amazing newer technology and modern hull designs when it comes to sailing. This is going to make your vessel far easier to sail solol or short handed and make them far more comfortable and efficient to live aboard full time or even just weekenders without buying more boat than you need.
I offer a wide variety of services including consulting where I will take you through the entire process of how to budget properly, choosing what vessel size will work for your needs, what type of vessel, I will help you shop for vessels, determine offer prices, schedule surveys, talk with brokers, teach you how to do your own pre-survey, walk you through hiring the correct surveyor and help you avoid all of the common pitfalls that you will find when purchasing used sailing vessels.
The consulting does not stop there, I will be with you every step of the way and long after you have purchased your vessel as consulting also comes with lifetime access to the members area,.
Chasing Latitudes hosts a large, active private members area where the members are more than happy to offer their own experience to solve problems, host private videos for ASA Sailing quizzes (ASA 101, 103, & 104), and live stream videos which feature anything from member cruising to boat shopping, boat comparisons, and other live content with chat from the subscribers to my RU-vid channel and channel members.
It’s time for YOU to get on the water. Come aboard!

Centre cockpits on larger boats can make sense because you won't compromise so much on saloon space and the cockpit itself can be large enough. One advantage I found is the motion comfort when you are closer to the middle of the boat is better. In addition, the space behind the cockpit can still be used for lounging around. My Westerly 43 CC had these nice "love" seats completely aft which were nice provided the conditions weren't too rough.

One more strike on the Cat 385 - the sea hood / sliding hatch only opens a laughable amount. At 6’2” I have to contort myself to get into and out of the cabin. Just stupid.

Great video! Buying a used sailboat for crossing oceans is a bold endeavor, but you guys are handling it like pros. Jeff may have picked a fight he couldn't finish, but that's all part of the learning experience. Take the L, learn from it, and come back stronger. And yes, it's definitely a 51.1, no doubt about it! Keep up the incredible work, you guys are absolute ball busters out there on the water. Can't wait to see where your sailing adventures take you next!

Quick question (not to challenge your position but to understand it): why does capsize screening mean nothing to you? As far as I can tell, it's a valid design factor... does it really have no bearing in actual practice?
@ChasingLatitudes
@ChasingLatitudes 8 месяцев назад
Does not take into account the location of the ballast, hull design as well as several other factors, the capsize ratio was introduced in the late 70's after a sailing race where multiple boats went down, not an actual valid number to base anything off of
@MistaEmPe
@MistaEmPe 8 месяцев назад
@@ChasingLatitudescould you please show us in a video how all of those mentioned factors affect stability AND comfort? Maybe compare a deep fin keel balast to ballast in hull? Show how decieving their numbers are?

I didn't see this video when it was posted 4mth ago but it hasn't aged well. There are zero 51.1 on yachtworld for less than 300k. And no way are those going to be less than 5 yrs old. At 225k, you are around the same age and size as the Catalina 385. But yes, when the price is in the same ballpark, go with the Bene

A lot less if you have a Jordan series drogue and attachment points rated for atleast 30% more than the weight of your boat fully loaded.

Why are old sailboats not depreciated more? The amount of 1980's boats for $100,000 is ridiculous. I get that you have dumped money into the boat and you want to get it back out. Maybe the rigging and sails are new, but structurally everything is still 1980. The aluminum in the mast is still old and stressed, the spreaders are probably old. I could buy a 2000's boat for $100,000 and at the very least not have 20 years of stress. Why are boat buyers so willing to throw too much money at something a bank would not give you a loan for? Can you really get insurance for the amount you over-paid for an old boat? ranting...
@datamack
@datamack 6 месяцев назад
IMO is because the market is at a breaking point and these sellers are living in the past thinking Covid is still a thing and their boat is an “investment” instead of the depreciating asset it is. I love these videos and the comparison to the ex charters because those are actual businesses that are selling the used assets and you see a true market price. Private sellers are living in a fantasy world and maybe the don’t need to sell, but they can’t keep propping up inflated expectations forever.

Sorry guys … US-made boats are shit. Good brands are all scandinavian or italian: Swan, Halberg-Rassy, X-yachts, Solaris, Grand Soleil, Italia Yachts (see who wins the ORC races… no others). Then there are the French and German mass production… Benetteau, Jeanneau, Dufour, Hanse and Bavaria … taking into account that Germans have big problems with quality .. everybody think that German are reliable but this works for cars, not for boats … Benetteau and Jeanneau 100 times over Hanse and Bavaria … not to be forgotten … Elan, it’s Slovenian, made in Croatia, and some Elan last generation are quite good. All the US made are shit … with the exception of J-boat that are anyway overpriced for what they are. I personally will be happy to commute my Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 (2020) with a Grand Soleil 44 Performance … my favorite 44ft … winner of ORC world championship
