I was really surprised that you did not include some of the cheaper marinas in the keys. I will be there in December, and I am being charged, $3.50 a foot. A nice marina (Sea Bird) in Long Key. I am usually on the hook but for Christmas I thought it would be nice to be a little closer in. Good winds.
I was lucky as an over the road truck driver. ( yes some truckers sail 😃) I'm only home from Friday to Monday morning, so most marina's don't consider me a live aboard. I stay.the weekend and go to work. Now, when I retire in a few years we'll see.
Even on dry land, a 41 foot boat will cost you $450-$750 a month.....plus insurance. If youre in Florida, with a $100k boat, it will be $700-$1000 a month, just to own the boat (storage and insurance)(not including maintenance and payments on the boat if not paid for).
Don't forget laying over or on the hard in Arkansas or similar affordable up river stays. A CB radio gives you a lot of local information and welcomes. I consider a boat a launch. A way to jump on the water, do heavy trips, return to a trailer, and get fixed up in a backyard. If you can trailer your boat, you own it.
Indeed, that's great for inland cruising. But anything that'll fit on a trailer is not something you want to be doing 300 mile Caribbean passages in! To your point however, large marinas in rural areas are your best bet for reasonable prices. I'd imagine you don't even have to go up river, just stay the heck out of south Florida...
Most important is where will you keep??? Currently I have a 45ft slip but my marina told me it a 2 to 3 yr wait list for anything 50ft or bigger. I was planning on selling my 40ft and going bigger but now I’m not so sure about anything over 48ft. Oh most marinas don’t allow liveaboard That’s something nobody told me…
You already destroyed my dreams of a 45CC. Both with the 45 foot slip and with the CC(pendulum), see i do listen. But this is great i love going father south. Ill be sure to fill up on everything and buy you a beer in Puerto Rico before heading spending the winter close to the equator
Nice video. Thank you for taking the time to make them. I was wondering if you can share which map program were you using during your video? Please advise!
Im really itching to buy a liveaboard, and now the UK is burning its bringing me closer to selling the house, buying a boat and getting the hell out of dodge! ill definitely be going to with full consult package to get on the water sooner "rather" than later 😁
@@jacobuszwanenburg1629 ah I didn't want to write a lengthy essay, but my plan is to sell the house and leave the UK for good (retire in Asia), the sale should provide enough for a boat and an apartment in Thailand, I work remotely and aren't too far away from drawing on my pension, although im looking at £150,000 boats, maybe a fairly new Dufour 41 as they should be in that range in a couple of years. Firstly i need to sell my workshop contents and all the crap we accumulate.
@@ChasingLatitudes Over here that is a pretty standard rate, there are more expensive options too, but they are in the minority. In guest harbors the standard rte is about 35-40 euros per night. 50 and over is considered expensive.
Have you done a video on the types of maps that are useful for sailing the Caribbean? Where to get the best maps? I've been looking and they add up quick.
@@ChasingLatitudes If you're lucky. Now it is getting harder to pass. They have a new limit of big ships per day. Sad but true. I hope that the new train passage from Mexico can get on their way soon. I believe it could be much shipper to ship your smaller boat on a train and save lots of time doing so. The Mexican train will be an aid to the Panama Canal. Not a replacement.
Very expensive. Dominican Republic marinas in general are expensive. In Santo Domingo there is a marina but not safe. On the north of the republic close to Puerto Plata is Luperon. Luperon is a free location with many boats. If you do not join a close watch group of boats, your boat will become vandalize by the locals. Just facts. I will never visit the DR again.
