Whooo! I couldn't even picture what a ton of feed looked like. Wow! That has to feel so good knowing you are set for quite some time. We do buy bulk goat feed, but this may have just inspired some bulk bird feed as well.

one thing I get concerned with is that I understand that feed degrades overtime. I understand and fully agree that being stocked is good. I just don't know, 6 months seems a long time. I've always heard don't buy more than 1-2 months

this is a great thread and exactly what I was looking for as I live on an Island off the coast of Mass and I'm stressing about having "enough" food for the winter. I"m sure I could get other chicken mama's and papa's in on a wholesale buy as well. I'm familiar with those red olive barrels and looked up where I could get some in Mass.. I tried to stock up for the summer and my grain ended up going bad... I'm wondering how long your grain lasted in those barrels on the pallets? I'm super anxious about getting enough for this winter! I only have 15 chickens but we only have one grain store here and shipping .. well I don't want to count on it.. I'm planning to ferment some and also try to sprout some with my grow lights as they are idle most of the winter anyway.. I'm thinking flat sized boxes with hardware cloth framed in on top and sides and voila.. feedback anyone? Thanks again .. this is great!

Have you tried fermenting the feed? I've heard that stretches feed even further. I'm going to try fermenting. And I've ordered mealworms to raise fir the layer protein.

where are you located? I am near spokane and get feed for way cheaper per ton. Happy to give you the name of my feed guy if you are local

Hahah look at all the chickens in the background all bunched up looking at the feed. 😂 Need to add that the barrels need to be off the ground other wise condensation will mold the bottom of the barrels.

Buying bulk organic might also be an opportunity to grow said feed so you're completely self reliant..... if it sprouts, raise it.
