I started out in a Pearl Export kit (the lowest line at the time) many years ago and I've recommended their kits to all of my drum students for nearly 4 decades. Of course, there are several competing manufacturers that make great beginner kits, but I've observed that Pearl (My general impression) cares alot about the quality and consistency of their beginner kits. I've always believed that quality bearing edges are more important than doodads like floating tom mounts and what type of tree was sacrificed to build the drums.

Even though I don't play Pearl drums, I've always had respect for them! I've seen a student of mine purchase these drums. I set them up for him and was really impressed with everything!

@Darrin Nunyah I have to agree with you 100%. Pearl's attention to overall build quality as well as QC shows, at least in my example, The bearing edges on my (02/2021) Export EXX are worthy of a two thumbs up for excellence comment. And to find this in this segment at this price point is just wow! I like the EXX's hybrid Asian mahogany & poplar wood shells too. Look great, and the tones are appealing to my ear. Not experienced enough to know how much of that is the size of the shells, their construction or composite woods, e.g. the largish 22x18 kick & larger 16" floor tom, or a bit of all as I suspect along with all the other things like Remo UTC skins, tuning, (kick drum pillow) damping etc. Mine were a pleasure to assemble and tune too. A year and a half on, initial buyer excitement has long faded and owner pride is sufficiently under control to be honest in my appraisal, although I admit bias because of how good they are I would sum this set up with the statement as having exceeded expectation in every respect. I am so very glad I went with them and would buy the same again.

So many good options now in decent quality drums and cymbals available from the major manufacturers. I started out banging on cardboard boxes out in the back yard. Then begged and needled my Mom for a drum set for Christmas when I was 13 years old. I received my first 'drum set' for Christmas that year: A Remco 'Liverpool Compact' three-piece kit: 12" snare drum, 10" tom, and a 16" bass drum and a 10" piece of metal which was supposed to be a cymbal. I was thrilled and that little set put me on the road to a lifetime (and still going) of collecting and playing drums. I now have a collection of excellent drums and cymbals but I will forever be thankful to my Mom for getting me started for a lifetime of something I truly love.

I have a roadshow fusion. Ive been playing for a while but wanted something fairly inexpensive. I was very impressed by the kit and hardware and love to play it. But it is true you will have to upgrade the cymbals if you want a better sound. But i def recommend these to any beginner or intermediate players.

@@skeeeyatata_1859 All brands' shells at that price point will be multi-ply poplar and will sound similar, size notwithstanding. For the $$$ they sound pretty good. The tone and sound can be improved inexpensively with a just a change of batter heads accompanied by competent tuning. Most entry level sets e.g. Roadshow, Rydeen come supplied OOTB with unbranded single ply clear mylar heads, except for the snare which will usually be coated.

I've been weighing up the Pearl Roadshow against the TAMA Rhythm Mate for a long time. Both have roughly the same specs, same (complete) kits, colors and price (and yes, both crappy stock cymbals). Ended up going for the TAMA RM, as some of my favorite musicians play TAMA (e.g. Deftones, Helmet).

Go acoustic if given the choice, I started with electric and though I had mesh pads and it was a medium to higher end kit i feel as though a lot of the feel to technique translation was lost, specific techniques are harder to learn and some of them may not work entirely on electric. Having been in this position a year and a bit ago myself, although well self-briefed and although I went with neither of these, I concur Pearl's Roadshow or Yamaha's Rydeen on a tight budget are no brainer choice bang for the buck clear winners. Ultimately I chose to go up a notch on both to Pearl's Export EXX 22" Fusion Plus shell pack + 803 HW pack bundle as the preferred way for me to buy. In doing so, for the same money as a bundle, I got to select my preferred & more expensive Meinl cymbals, a much better than entry level basic throne, & a range of Vater and VIC FIRTH sticks & Meinl Deluxe stick bag rather than any of the basic bundles which came with the sets if buying that way. Truth is, I wanted and had budgeted up to the Yamaha Custom Stage Birch even if undeniably it is/was overkill for entry, but they just weren't available and wouldn't be for months PEAK COVID plandemic. In hindsight completely excluding buyer pride bias or rationalisation, I'm glad I went with the Pearl Export EXX instead. Left me a huge chunk of change to buy all those extras & accessories which are always an afterthought, and there's absolutely nothing shabby about it at all. Exceeded expectations would be the most accurate accolade. Build quality, rim edges, components, finish, what's included, tone, suitability for purpose including gigging, I truly couldn't be happier. Now that said, not faults, but two only extremely minor criticisms as with anything including possibly either Yamaha had I gone there, but I'm an attention to detail guy. Geared Rack Tom mounts. Obviously Yamaha's ball system is ergonomically superior. But then with Pearl's Export you get Opti-Loc isolation on the Tom mounts whereas on Yamaha's Rydeen, they are direct mount, so you have to move up a segment and a significant wad of $$$ to the Stage Custom Birch to get isolation mounts on Yamaha's Rack Toms. I'm no gear snob though. It's what you do with it that really counts. Roadshow or Rydeen will do a splendid job. If I'd been gifted or cash assisted into either as a kid or teen, man I'd have felt like I was just offered a jump seat ride to the moon with the crew on Apollo 11!
@LAOWayMusic

So what was your total cost of a kit?
@theblytonian3906
@theblytonian3906 2 года назад
@@LAOWayMusic Apologies. I wrote a detailed reply, then promptly lost it. o.O Can't be bothered writing it again. In brief I everything bought well and selectively, and a lot of accessories too with the difference between my initial budget I'd set aside for Yamaha's Stage Custom Birch and Pearl's Export EXX. Buying the Pearl EXX as I did but with my own choice of throne, cymbals, sticks, bag I ended up with better and my preferred everything for around the same price as Pearl's EXX basic inc. cymbals and throne bundle sells for everywhere. Going with the Export EXX left a big chunk of change from had I gone the Yamaha Stage Custom Birch route. I bought a LOT of extra kit with that chunk. In hindsight, ego/owner pride aside, I'm pleased I went with the Pearl Export EXX as it'll more than serve my every foreseeable need for many years. Its Mahogany/Poplar shells are versatile and sound great to my ear as does the 22" kick drum. I really like its snare drum as mentioned in this review.

No Paiste cymbals? My first drum set back in 1990, looked like a refugee off the curb, my second one was made by Royce, the third one was a double bass Pearl Export used. The fourth one was short lived can't remember if it was a CB percussion. My current kit I have had since 1998, I paid $1,000 from my uncle and is a larger Ludwig kit. 24" bass drum 18" floor tom, and 4 rack toms 8" 10" 13" 14". He bought it used in 1990. The original owner must have custom ordered this kit in about 1981. 70's Zilligian cymbals. DW 5000 double pedal. Vater drum sticks.

Do not buy a toy thinking it will be "good enough" to practice on. As it will not, and you will lose interest in the drums. No, you lost interest in a toy, not a musical instrument! Wuhan cymbals have good sounding entry cymbals as well. Regretfully they are a Chinese brand, but the quality of the materials used to make what is their entry level cymbals is a higher quality than the other guys. The cymbals are machine made, instead of hand made, and being made in China is why lower cost. But they sound surprisingly good for the price, and it's primarily the materials used that create the cymbals sound.

I've come to the conclusion that if I want to produce music that grooves as hard as Swans, I've gotta get a kit and learn how to play. I already play the guitar and trombone, so hopefully I'll be able to pick up the drums relatively quickly if I put the hours in in the wood shed. I'm going to be buying a kit in a few days and will start getting to work learning how to play some grooves I really fuck with (i.e. Swans grooves lol) I think once I get good enough I'll drop some cash on some high end cymbals, and start figuring out exactly what type of drums I need to get the tones I want.

I have been watching videos about drum kits... and am leaning toward the Ludwig Element Evolution 6pc kit....with 20" kick drum.... seems that kit would be the most flexible in configurations... would likely start out by just setting up the kick, snare, and hats...then add pieces as my kids and I get into it... this would also have us starting out with pretty good stuff I think and not needing to buy anything soon besides sticks and possibly heads if we beat them to death. Also, we would have what would basically be the upgrade cymbals to one of the Roadshow or Ludwig Accent kits, as well as possibly better hardware. Do you think this would be a good route to go, and then if one of us gets really into it, buy nicer hi-hats, and playing side heads down the road? Happy new year!
@BehindtheBeatwithChrisLangan
@BehindtheBeatwithChrisLangan 3 года назад
That's not a bad idea at all! You're right, you can configure that kit in many ways! You'll have the drums down (the hard part), then you can just add cymbals and other gear as you go!

I would recommend one of the "Fusion" kits. Alot of drummers play with their kits set up like the "Rock" kit, meaning one tom up and then two floor toms, but you can do that with the fusion kit as well. just remove the second tom from the bass drum.

I’ve bought several Wuhan cymbals over the years. I’m a big fan of their 18” China and all of their slashes. I don’t think I’ve ever played anything in the 457 series, but overall they are really great cymbals for the price. Better than some of those cheap zildjian, sabian packs. In my opinion!

y first drum kit cost $50 and was many different colors, 2nd one was $200 and was a Royce, 3rd was a used Pearl Export giant kit I paid $500, next kit was aa kit I had a short time, forgot the brand. My current kit is a vintage 1981 era Ludwig over sized drums, single bass drum, That I paid $1,000 for from my uncle in about 1998. Great sounding kit.

Thank you for watching!! I really appreciate it! The export series is one of the all-time tried and true kits! I would 100% recommend it!! I went with this series only because I understand that alot of people don't know what they are getting into when they buy drums. You don't get all the bells and whistles. These kits give you everything to get going, sound great, and you can upgrade from there. But the export are amazing drums that have stood the test of time! So Yes...absolutely! If you do plan to purchase an export kit online, all I ask is to use the affiliate links in the description of this video if you choose to buy through Amazon! It will take you to the kits I mentioned in the video, but you could search for whatever you want and they will give me a little kickback for recommending! Much appreciated! Best of luck and have fun!

@@BehindtheBeatwithChrisLangan Hey Chris, and thanks for the quick respond...I am not sure i will order it via Amazon...probably from an online store here in Switzerland...No hard feelings..))...I was even considering getting an E-Drum Kit, like the Millenium mps-850 for example...BUT....an "E-KIT"...??? Does it really make sense..??? Sound, feedback etc...?? I figure if i could isolate the room good, we`ll be fine...Or am i dreaming??? When i enter a music store, i stand by the drum kits like a little boy, thinking of old times.....and the sight of an E-Drum kit just doesn´t do it for me...am i WRONG about that??? A good Pearl Export i could buy for around 750-850 CHF...(more or less the same in USD) and the Millenium for E-Kit for around 650-700...so not really a big difference....But, could i isolate the Apartment in such way i/we can play without having SWAT at the door every evening??? (Short Info...no neighbours below, only above and in the back there is a nail polishing studio....) Could i Sound Isolate so that the outgoing sound is minimum??? ..And than the Export series come in such varieties...where do we start...20" base is enough...right..?? I was thinking maybe just to out start with base drum Hi-Hat and snare...and built in the toms later...does that make sense to you??? Anyway...i don´t want to take up all your time, i bet you have better things to do...thanks in advance...Tumi

Most of the time you're only getting a shell pack when you buy a kit. Drums only! And they start around $500. Now go buy all your stands, cymbals, throne, pedal, sticks, accessories. This comes with everything you need to at least sit right down and play.

Well man...start playing now if you already don’t. Practice like crazy. Get good! Find a band and book some local shows. Doing it for a living is next to impossible. I still have other jobs. But I do tour and make some money from playing gigs. As for a RU-vid channel, you won’t make a living unless you dedicate ALOT of time to making videos and being different . I don’t survive off of RU-vid. Sure I’ll get little checks here and there once in a while from ad revenue and stuff like that but I would get good, get a band, and play shows. Do RU-vid cuz it’s fun. And if your content is good. You will build up enough subscribers to make a little side cash too

@@gabesuarez3474 Thanks for the follows brother! Thats great you already have been playing! What kind of videos do you want to make? There's alot out there so you want to find something that sets you apart. Perhaps you could do some videos that focus on marching snare. Lessons that will help younger kids get a jump start for when they enter high school!! Dont worry too much about fancy cameras or anything just yet. Your phone will work fine. Start looking into how to edit videos and what programs you will need. I use adobe premiere pro, but there are lots of alternatives out there for editing videos. get on youtube and start learning how to film yourself, and then edit a video so that it looks good and flows. For instance...If you make a lesson video on paradiddles...just shoot the whole thing. if you mess up, just keep rolling and start over. Learning to edit videos will allow you to remove the bad stuff, keep the good stuff, and spice it up to how you see fit. thats where I would start. you already know drums...Learn about video editing, and how to get your videos attention on youtube. Do live streams. make a tik tok, check out other platfroms. Stay in touch man...I'm always here if you have questions
