It's a busy morning on the farm as we are spraying out the chicory in preparation of sowing annual ryegrass into it. Cow 166 is suckling off other cows so we put a temporary measure in to stop that!
And I have brought some maize from next door to top up the pit.
As always thanks For Watching!!!

Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

If you put those nose weaning rings in with spikes down, they'll poke the offender and you won't risk her tearing up some other cow's udder. I use those all the time when I have issues with calves. Drop them in hot water and they'll be easier to put in. At our farm we call them nose jewelry or the ring of shame.

Awesome video as always my friend. I’d say your dad’s done that before, but it certainly looks a bit dangerous pushing the cow backwards, what a great device that nose ring is. Best get your bike fixed before it lets you down. Thanks for sharing mate.

@@TheOnceADayFarmer Have you ever thought of harvesting your own grass silage?
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer 3 года назад
@@georgekenny9820 not really to be honest as the only grass silage we make is in bale form and I can’t justify all the out lay spending all that money on equipment to make 80-100 bales a year. Great question tho thanks! 👍
@georgekenny9820
@georgekenny9820 3 года назад
@@TheOnceADayFarmer Thanks for reply, sorry I didn't mean for you to buy your own silage equipment but just for you to grow your own grass & have the contractor cut & bale it, I know it would not be as good as maise but would not be too far off when baled at the right stage, all leaf & no stem. I think there would be a saving there as you are growing your own crop, or maybe you are stocked too tightly for it.
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer 3 года назад
We do bale roughly 80-120 bales of grass silage annually and the contractor just takes and bale it, all dependent on if we have spare grass that is but we do grow about 125,000 kg/DM Maize ourselves I just brought some more in to be on the safe side. I like maize because I think it keeps good condition on the cows. Hope that sort of answers your question?

Firstly I was surprised when you said 15 ton of maize and then you explained it was dry matter. Your father is a very capable man to deal with that cow in the shoot (crush in Ireland) another good video.

You have a great herd of jerseys to you dry off all at once and calve them in at once or do you milk year round
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer 3 года назад
All depends on the season But typically we all dry them off together or within a week of each other. I don’t use dry cow or anything. And then they all calve within about 9-10 weeks starting from July 17th

Hey great video!! Just wondering if you see a big difference between the herds? 1is all grass fed and your herd is fed some maize. Does it affect the fat and protein??
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer 3 года назад
Great question and to be honest I’m not sure because all the milk goes into one vat but the MS% Is definitely higher in the maize fed herd along with the production or litres per cow, I just can’t put a figure on it sorry
