Buying the Highest Mileage BMW Z3M Coupe in the US and Driving Across Country!

I've been dreaming about the Z3M coupe for years. Back in highschool and college I didn't have the means to buy one, and in recent years the prices have gone pretty crazy for these which makes them hard to justify buying as a daily driver.
I stumbled upon this particular clownshoe which was right in my budget range due to the high miles. It looked to be in great shape, and mileage on these older BMW's doesn't scare me as long as proper maintenance has been performed.
Sure enough this thing turned out to be the gem for me and I got to drive it home 800 miles from Pennsylvania to Chicago!

Bruh! The M Coupe is a never sell car. Was shopping for a 997.1 Porsche (05-08) and come to find out those engines blow up. Then bought an M Coupe w an S52 and is an awesome car. Bulletproof engine. If anything just get the engine rebuilt and your good to go again!!

Holy cow dude, we had almost the exact same experience. I was looking at Z3’s for a couple month (albeit the roadster version). I learned that there are tons of roadsters, as long as you want a shit one lol. The better ones (3.0/M Roadsters) are very hard to find clean. On January 4th I found one in Georgia at a dealership called Quality Autos. The dealer reviews were very good and the car was absolutely spotless, so I flew down there from Maryland and bought the car. A 2001 Z3 3.0i Roadster with a 5 speed stick. The car had 129,000 miles and had only 2 owners, the second of which had it for 17 years. All services were performed at BMW at 3,000 mile intervals almost religiously. I drove it back home to Maryland almost 700 miles. Took it straight to a German automobile shop and had the sparks replaced, oil changed, diff fluid changed, coolant flushed and expansion tank replaced, power steering rack replaced, and all hoses replaced. I had a similar diff whine like yours but nothing came of it. I absolutely LOVE this car. I have 2 other cars that I daily, a 2021 Tesla Model Y and a 2019 AWD Mazda3 Premium and the Z3 has won be over. I haven’t touched my Mazda in almost a month.

That's awesome and a fun story! Glad the car worked out and turned out to be what you hoped for. Agreed, they're a ton of fun to drive and definitely hard not to choose the clownshoe when i need to go somewhere!

I rather have the US s52 as it is more reliable, less maintenance and more than enough to have fun in the z3.

Cant argue with that. The S52 has much less problems than the S54.

Maaannn you don't even realize it, but S52 is better than the S54. The S54 is too iffy. The motor is way more complex which actually hurts reliably. I would put a turbo kit on the S52, run 10 psi of boost and make 385-420 HP on pump gas and still have better reliability than the S54 and not to mention it will be faster. If it wasn't for the fact that the S54 has more horsepower it would literally be considered a worst engine than the S52 . If I was in the market for a Z3 Coupe, I would probably be the only BMW guy in the world that would specifically want the S52. 💯 So if I had to make a say on it, I would say you got lucky with the S52 motor.
@Enginerded
@Enginerded 2 года назад
You're not wrong! The S52 is super stout and reliable and more torquey for every day driving. Its a great motor and would be fun to boost one day down the road. The S54 has always been a dream motor of mine though and i definitely need one some day, whether i swap it into the clownshoe or buy an e46 m3!

@@Enginerded I guess.. lol, I would put that money toward boosting and tuning the S52, but hey to each their own. If you choose to buy an S54 I would suggest low balling the seller and reminding him/her of how unreliable and expensive that engine can be for up keep. If you can find one at a steal it MAY be worth it. I personally wouldn't pay over 3.5k for one. Lol.. Good Luck 👌🏽😎💯

@@Enginerded Dang. I just looked at the price on those S54 engines and they are anywhere from $6k-$12k! 😂 Do you know how much better you can make the S52 vs the S54 for half that cost?? After the boost build on the S52, I would just purchase the S54 valve cover to make it look like the S54 while actually being better. 💯🤣🤣 The S54 isn't solid enough to be priced that high, the only way to get those prices down is for BMW owners to stop following the hype and actually realize that the M54, S52, and M52 engines are solid as hell and can easily make 400hp+ whp without even opening the block. It's not like the S54 sounds any different, in fact the M54B30 sounds a lot deeper and arguably better than the S54. So since you can make a 2.8-3.0 faster than the S54 with very little effort and money when compared to the price of the S54 engine alone, then what are people really paying for besides a ticking time bomb because of that intricate/complex head it has?? Not trying to argue with you, just can't make sense of the waste of money when you can literally have a faster and more reliable M54, S52, or M52 for literally less than half the cost of that entire S54 engine. 🤦🏾 Lol .smh.
@Enginerded
@Enginerded 2 года назад
Yeah the prices have gone really nuts for the S54's, but so has absolutely everything car related. The S54 is special (in my opinion) by its heavily motorsport derivation. Its a high strung NA I6 that you can rev to 8500-9000 rpm and the sound amazing. A nicely set uo S54 with the CSL air box, headers, and custom exhaust makes it sound absolutely amazing up top and paired with a short diff ratio, blasting through the gears with the noises that motor makes is hard to beat. Everyone has their own preference in engine sound/power delivery. That right there is where mine is. But also cant deny the awesome fun of a boosted S52 making tons of torque and all the good turbo noises, plus being less maintainence. Either way you go is a good time! I've had my E46 with the M54 for 9 years and that thing just doesnt give up. At 206k miles now with tons of cross country, track day, drift even, towing, and daily miles and it keeps chugging along.
