Buzz Ramsey, Jack Glass, Nick Amato and Steve Lynch go for a winter steelhead trip in January of 2021 in Oregon, near Portland on the Sandy River.
This year has been cold and low on fish numbers...but that doesn't mean they aren't there.
Though the fish may be harder to come by, they're still moving through the system so you've really got to hit a lot of water and try to find a mover and/or a biter.
Conversation involves hatchery and wild steelhead talks, the excellence of genetics and broodstock programs. The need for wild stock components.
"The Good ol' Days" are reminisced about, as this group has fished for decades - seen the good and the bad as far as salmon or steelhead runs go.
While fishing with Lamiglas SI bobber-dogging rods, spinning reels, braid, floats, 1/3 oz. Dave's Tangle Free weights and 10 - 12mm BNR soft beads.
Nick, Buzz, Jack & Steve are bobber-dogging from the sled, fishing edges and flats in the river, as well as targeting riffles and tailouts. Covering likely holding water...looking for a fresh fish. Do they find one?

Just watched. I've got a Buzz Ramsey 9.5 bass pole. That's why I'm here. Haven't fished in 6 7 years. It's calling me again. Thanks

First Steelhead, 35 years ago down on the other side of the bridge. I'd love just sitting on the Bow and run the camera and listen to the stories, but I'd have them all mic'd.

Our native american friends have harvested salmon, steelhead as well as sea lions. The native americans did not let opportunity go to waste. Just as they are allowed to harvest fish, they are entitled to harvest and eat sea lions...!! We need to enable sea lion harvest. So make a new friend and take tribal members out on your boat and a fine sea lions meal can be enjoyed by the tribe....!!

I don't feel so bad getting skunked Mon after seeing a boat full of legends only catch one. The Sandy has been super crowded and the fishing has been slow.

20ft boat, 3 of the best local fishermen, and lucky to catch 1 fish. THERE"S NO FISH IN THE WATER! The last 3 years on the Sandy have been horrible. Its normal to see 10 to 12 other fishermen and nobody has had any luck. I must of went 15 times last year and didn't catch anything except suckers. How is the Sandy River a fishery? I know there's issues with Gill-Nets, Sea Lions, Climate Change, Pollution, Dams and you name it, but I think there needs to be an emphasis on making the Sandy a fishery again? I just want to hear from ODFW or the Hatcheries that they know it sucks and they're working on making it better. ** I acknowledge that removing Marmot Dam, Killing Sea Lions and Habitat work is being done and I appreciate that work.

I got a steelhead and 2 coho Sunday and gave my buddy a coho and lost 2 at the bank. There’s not as many as there once was. There is still fish to be had

I think there's got to be a way to improve and modernize fish ladders...fish passage...without diminishing some of the cleanest power on the planet, and demolishing billions of dollars worth of infrastructure. Its carbon emission free.

Awesome idea to catch and use Wild Steelhead for Broodstock and hopefully build the fish runs so there is more anadromous fish to migrate the rivers. I would like to see all the Washington State Rivers with Broodstock Fisheries.

I consider the fishery, is the worst than I have ever seen here in the State of Washington. We should have the best fishery's Managers in the State of Washington, but we don't.

The steelhead runs are terrible this year and there only going to get worse as long as the states of Oregon and Washington get paid from the federal government for fish that are not there the runs will never get better do you really think there going to not want more money
@lawrenceblue8207
@lawrenceblue8207 3 года назад
I don't understand why the Government stopped doing their job instead of continuing with the hatchery fishery and learn to grow and developed more ideas when it comes to hatchery-raised fish and learning Technology when it comes to better ways.

One less fish to spawn naturally. Brilliant. Hatcheries are so efficient that the million fry placed in the Sandy each year result in fewer and fewer fish each year 🤷‍♂️ Guess what? Steelhead are going extinct.
@chrishelmstetter4447
@chrishelmstetter4447 2 года назад
Sandy doesn't release millions of fry and that the problem. The lawsuits have reduced the numbers that they are allowed to plant to just 180k winters and 70 k summers.

Dams aren't the problem. Over commercial fishing is the reason for poor fish numbers.

I like cheap electricity, no flooding and water for irrigation. Cant wait to hear plan to replace them when they take dams out. Get real.

Don’t have to agree with him just know he is right 110% it’s the dams that fucked us.
@brianjohnston4207

The problem is the 4 lower snake dams don't block any habitat. The Clearwater, Grand Ronde, Palouse,Salmon all are accessible through the 4 lower dams. Now Chinook traditionally mainly spawned between Hells Canyon and Shoshone Falls where migration ended naturally. Milner dam destroyed most of the spawning habitat on the snake in 1905 and the subsequent dams all the way downriver to Hells Canyon sit on the traditional spawning grounds. The 4 lower dams do not heat the water,they pass hot water downstream.
