BVI's British Virgin Islands - 30 Knot WIND, DIVING & Full Moon Party!
This is the second installation of our sailing in the British Virgin Islands (BVI's) series, and in this episode we sail to Norman Island (Treasure Island), then to Jost Van Dyke to hang out at the Full Moon Party. We get a couple Dives in, see a shark! Had a hell of a sail hitting 30 knot winds, lively seas...good time!
We fly off to the British Virgin Islands to Charter a Sailboat, Josh is hired to Captain the vessel for a group of new-to-sailing keeners, show them the ropes, expedite a training program based on ASA training syllabus, plus a wealth of knowledge obtained over his lifetime of sailing. Of course, the constraints of time and editing will see some gaps from the viewers perspective as to several aspects of the training, but we try to share some highlights...and there is no shortage of drama to unfold during this mini-series of our time sailing in the BVI's!

Thank you Shawn! We are well, very hot here, daily highs over 35. Don’t miss the coolness of BC coastal summers...rarely did it ever feel like “summer” with the exception of a few places, and the okanagan! Hope you’re well and staying safe!

Feed any iguanas you run into with hibiscus flowers, red ones especially, that's why if you're wearing red they might come up to you and try to chew on your shirt. There used to be a 1 story shack where the 3 story building is right at the end of the St. John dock. It had stones out front with a couple picnic tables, and there was no gate or building on the dock. My dad was involved in the St. John Pub that was there throughout the 1980s that sold subs, hotdogs, cold beer and mixed tropical drinks to the tourists. I used to go over to St. John and have lunch at The Backyard on some Saturdays, that was practically all traveling by road on that island I did in the years I was there. When I was 12 dad bought me a 13 foot Boston Whaler with a 55hp and besides the other 4 boats he had I used to use it to go to St. John once in a while. A couple times was to Trunk where we visited our schoolmate that lived in the house on the peninsula that you see. She used to travel to St. Thomas to go to school and back every day. My best friend's dad owned the largest dump truck on St. Thomas during the time they were moving the Eastern mountain to off the Western end of the runway extending it. His driver was dropping a load off the end, lost control and jumped out just in time to see it sink into the end of the runway. Time, resources, etc dictated that they just keep going. So when you land there, you are landing on a dump truck. My family of 6 including 2 of my grandparents were scheduled on the American Airlines flight that crashed on the island in 1976 running into a Shell gas station at the end of the short runway. My mom had a dream, and rescheduled us for a week earlier with all the work and changes made for dad's 3 stores to run for 2 weeks. We were at Magens when it crashed. A call went out for the 2nd most rare blood, AB-, which my father had. My dad said he wasn't taking time out from his vacation to donate blood. Read the karma my dad died to on that island 14 years after that crash, in this book with links below. I've probably been on more cruise ships than anyone reading this, yet never been on a cruise. My dad ran a ship chandlery that had a monopoly on selling liquor to the cruise ships in the early '80s, that I used to spend my afternoons after school doing my homework at, that was located at the last building on the Havensite dock (has Senior Frogs painted on its roof). After growing up on the island and starting when I was 17 in late 1986, we used to roam Charlotte Amalie downtown streets at night bar hopping Coconuts, Rosie O'Grady's, The Ritz, Yesterdays, then to the Greenhouse at 10pm for the current live band, when everyone was partying in the islands. Since the bars closed at 2 AM we would go out to steal cars, usually rentals, and race across the island, afterward sometimes stripping them for parts. I've floored it in a brand new 1987 Accord LXi from the Fort all the way to Frenchtown one night easily doing 100mph, or over 5 times the speed limit, which was not unusual to do with stolen cars but sometimes done even with the ones we sort of cared about. One night I was with a few locals and we got pulled over for racing into Frenchtown. The cop went to arrest one of us and he started skipping around the car in a circle repeatedly singing, "Haha you can't catch me!" to the cop. He made it a couple times around the car and we had to bail him out that night. I hold the record for most boats stolen in one night while alone; three - I took them to a birthday party. Would you like to read about real modern pirates based out of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands taking place in the end of the cocaine fueled '80s? What a great couple of stories! So lucky you weren’t on that plane. I feel like the whole place was a different animal well before the hurricanes decimated the place. It just didn’t quite have the charm and energy that it’s formerly reputed to have. We still had a good time, but it mostly felt like people were just putting up with us, sort of going through the motions. I’m glad you have such fond memories. Cherish them, for things are always changing. Thanks for the link too!

Hey it's BC aliens , your back , question is, where are you planning to go with your boat, East, West, back North , or South, all the seas of the world are waiting for you! Cheers , hope all is well in your salty world!

Thanks Andrew! Yes, with lockdowns easing in Mexico, we're finally able to get back into our favorite coffee shop and upload some vids. We have no plans for now other than to hang out in the Sea of Cortez, haul out this fall, do some more boat work, explore the many amazing anchorages here. We would eventually love to sail down the coast to Peru, out to easter island, off into the S. Pacific...and beyond. Things are obviously very unsettled around the world right now, so we're being the opposite and being very patient and settled. Which is easy to do right where we are. This is a wonderful country and a very incredible place to chill out until we're ready for another big leap.

Had another thought... I haven't see that many sailing videos take this educational tack (no pun intended) That is most 'educational' sailing videos just has someone recording himself or herself telling people how to sail.. With this you are talking to people and they end up asking questions and this makes it so the instructor (you) can't gloss over things that might be confusing to a neophyte

Yes, was never really our style. Always preferred docu style, but we’re shit videographers and know nothing about video production, setting up shots, creating storylines, etc...lol. But I’ve always detested the Wicked Salty style of point a camera up your nose and ramble on about bullshit like brushing your teeth and grocery shopping, or whatever! Lol. Perhaps we’ll do more instructional stuff as you’ve suggested, more interactive style. It’s a good concept. Not sure where (if) we’re going to take this channel next. It’s mostly a hobby diversion for now. It hasn’t generated enough interest to warrant a lot of our attention. We have to work on other things to keep income coming and keep up with boat maintenance. We did not start out rich and threw everything into buying and refitting the boat to get this far.

the mix he uses is UNBELIEVABLE. like the intro here (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fYYJ_NfJ19c.html) ants, slow zoom back, to a flag shadow that is fast because it is flapping pan to flag and sun... so beautiful fast cut to 3-5 images of where they are then long shot of the road for the establish where they are just as you get that, he speeds up the motion each time he is reminding you of the beat of the music (rhythm cutting, and cutting on the beat) now he isn't doing boat stuff, but he has the best boat videos and lest you forget that the road winds until you get to a sailboat (in the middle of the desert) emotionally and mentally reminding you who he is and then his family but his family (the stars of the show) looking at scenery... then scenery all that in 43 seconds
@titustiger27
@titustiger27 4 года назад
Now I get... he shot hour (s) to get that 42 seconds then at the end of that his talking is over a map so you are listening and listening but not talking heads... no doubt he has talking heads but the mix is so beautiful ... close up long shots then at 3:50 the steering wheel.. something NO one things to record... and a pay up (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fYYJ_NfJ19c.html_ ) to the sailboat (again) the juxtaposition... and stop it and look at the sky and the boat it's work, but the more you work, the more you start thinking... how do I start this shot... do I start with my old deck shoe with water sloshing around, my fist around the wheel to 30 knot winds... and to be honest 94% of viewers want to see more bikini's but that doesn't mean they can't be sensuous over gratuitous relevant over laziness

Was going to make a sarcastic comment about fenders out a sea and the convenience of on call mechanics when cruising, then realized it was a charter... Sail on!

Lol, exactly...there for a good time! You’ll see in the next few vids tho how inconvenient these tools from the charter co were.
