No 1 POST WAR CONTAMINATION DETECTION METER
Radioactivity detection unit, produced after the Second World War as a result of the Cold War period. These units were made on instruction from the government, and supplied to all Councils and Military establishments.
It was expected that in the event of a Nuclear attack, they would be ready to measure contamination levels.

Great piece of Cold War history right there! Keep up the good work guys your channel is awesome. By the way I like the flag in the background please look up the Taunton flag it still flys today in Taunton Massachusetts USA on the city green.

Something from the 1950s is still working because they had real solder then not lead free rubbish 😂. A peek inside would be nice 👌

There is a MOD pdf you can download from the royal signals (wireless set 19 group) page with full battery specification

Hi chaps, this was a cool video to watch as i have the exact same units! I have the 1955 contamination meter (which doesn't work), so it was good to see the needle moving. I also have the ionising meter.

The first two probes detect contamination, the last one detects radiation. Removing the screw would indeed make it more sensitive, but you would also allow it to read Betegamma as opposed to just gamma. A high atomic z number material shields beta hence the bolt providing shielding. The switch will change the channel it reads on. If its a higher level of radiation the switch should allow you to read the level on a higher scale. I am not to familiar with these units. However, I have used Instruments that are similar and work on the same theory. These instruments will have a certain efficiency, you would need to identify the minimum detectable activity to determine if your sources are strong enough for the instrument to detect. The other matter you were referring to with the smoke alarms. Most of the uk smoke alarms used to have an ionising source as a detector. The uk ones were ammericium 241, which is a small alpha source. They don't tend to sell these in the UK anymore for obvious reasons. 😂 Hope this helps.

The last Geiger counter you showed has the battery NATO stock number 6135-99-910-1101 listed on the card. I found the MOD battery info on The Wireless Set 19 Group’ page. It requires 2x 1.5V dry Leclanche No 1 batteries NATO type NBA 030

That's good then because NBA-030 is just a military spec D cell.
