This slide show is of our 8-day May/ June canoe trip to the Boundary Waters in Northern Minnesota.
By our normal Spring trip standards, this was a very easy trip! We wanted to leave plenty of time for daytrips, fishing and photography... we succeeded at that :-) We leisurely traveled from Ham Lake to Snipe, Cross Bay Lake then on to Long Island Lake and returned by the same route.
Watch the slide show and come along with us on our trip... 8 days in 14 minutes.
With the Covid-19 concerns it was a bit different making the 550 mile trip... no restaurant meals and also covering and sanitizing. Since the National Forest campgrounds in the area were still closed, we hit the water shortly after making the drive.

Another nice show Gary. Thanks for sharing with us. Going on a family trip in August to K Lake and points North. Maybe a fall trip also.

Another great trip. Two years ago my Nikon took a dunking at the portage from Horseshoe into Vista. I opened everything I could up and kept it in the sun as much as possible. In three days it dried out and worked fine. But I considered that luck. Some great shots even with the backup equipment. Thanks for sharing. I hope "Covid" will allow me to fly up from Florida for a September trip. If not I will be a grumpy bear until next year.

That's great your Nikon recovered! I removed the battery and memory card and put mine in the sun too... after a few days the LCD cleared up but it never did come back to life. Thanks for watching!

Hey I left a comment under the moose River video as well. You have a great eye to capture the spirit of the area. I really like the flute music sounds almost Native American can you tell me the artist? Even though Sag is home to me I'm heading up to Sawbill area begining of August hoping to see some moose. Thanks love your passion as I share the same!!!

Awesome trip and great job capturing that feeling. I'm looking to go at the same time this year. Do you have any advice? main concerns: cold water, weather, and bugs.
@HamerNaturePhotos
@HamerNaturePhotos 5 месяцев назад
Steve, thanks for watching and posting a comment! It was a fun entry point... can't believe it took us so many years to discover it. Predicting bugs is a crap shoot. If the early warmer weather continues, the mosquitoes may hatch out a bit earlier than normal and be out by the 3rd week of May... but who knows? Regardless, I'd be sure to a mosquito head net close by :-)

Stunning photography and video footage! Such a peaceful serene clip too! I appreciate that you respected the BWCA and kept your campsites very clean and were very quiet. This is the way everyone should treat the BWCA. My husband (drail80s who commented here somewhere) and I paddled a similar route in June 2010 and again in August 2018. We camped on Long Island Lake both times and explored the nearby lakes and river system. The first time we camped on Long Island Lake we chose the Island site, the second time we chose the site to the right of the portage in from Karl lake. It is one of my favorite areas, with high canyon like walls on smaller lakes, meandering rivers, and a larger lake all in one area. Thank you so much for bringing back precious memories, especially during such a precarious time in our world.

Thank you for the kind comments! For us, a slower pace yields a better experience... but maybe that's because most of the guys in my groups are in their 60s and we are slowing down 🙂 We just got back from our Spring trip to the Kawishiwi River area so stay tuned for that one.

What a beautiful trip! I will be planning my first trip to the BWCA in April. do you have any recommendations for a good 4 day trip? thanks!
@HamerNaturePhotos
@HamerNaturePhotos 3 года назад
Thanks for watching Robert! April might be pushing it... depending on the year, many of the lakes will still be frozen. My best advice would be to check out the bwca.com trip planning forum... tons of great info there: bwca.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=forum.enterForum&confid=1&forumid=16&action=enterForum

Can't believe I missed this ! Coming into Spring, the timing is great ! I haven't been to this area. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate this route ? I hope they get some moisture up there this year ! Thanks Gary !
@HamerNaturePhotos
@HamerNaturePhotos 3 года назад
Hi Jim - I'd give it about a 7. We enjoyed the route, our first time from this entry point too. It's relatively easy to get to Long Island Lake and lots of places to explore along the way. These days we are more into taking our time and really getting to know each area where we camp.

Is the partially burned paddle still stuck in the stump at that Ham lake site or did the FS or someone else remove it?

We didn't see it, though it would be symbolic for that site.

Thanks Jon! Frost River would be a cool route... with all the portages, I'm not sure it's in the cards for my aging crew :-) That would be sureal to come out of the wilderness to the news of 9/11!

@@HamerNaturePhotos You are right that route had a lot of lift overs due to beaver dams, very beautiful but also a very rugged trip.

Excellent photography, as usual. Enjoyed the first part especially since I'm so familiar with that area -- especially the campsite and "scenic part" of Snipe Lake (isn't all of Snipe scenic?) Very nice moose shots! btw... the photo you have labeled "first portage" was actually the 2nd one. That's where I fell on the one trip on my way out... I remember it well. Thanks for sharing! p.s. Sorry about your camera.

Thanks Larry! We kept thinking how easy it would have been to slip on those rocks on the portage going into Ham (you're right, the second portage) Especially since it was raining and the rocks were slippery on our way back to the car. It was my first time in that area and I really enjoyed it... lots of moving water to explore/ photograph.
@nibimocs
@nibimocs 4 года назад
@@HamerNaturePhotos Yeah, that was my problem... it had rained the night before so those rocks were slick. Thankfully, I don't fall often. I meant to ask if that old coffee pot was still at the site on Snipe.
@HamerNaturePhotos
@HamerNaturePhotos 4 года назад
@@nibimocs We did not see a coffee pot on Snipe
@nibimocs
@nibimocs 4 года назад
@@HamerNaturePhotos Someone must have finally removed it. I remember seeing that pot sitting on top of the fire grate back when Bogwalker and I were in the area back in 2012. It was still there when I last visited in 2018. I debated about whether to pack it out with me but decided, by then, it had become somewhat of an artifact. Apparently, someone else decided otherwise.
