DESCRIPTION
The Ponale path is one of the best known and most popular hikes in Trentino, ideal for walks in spring or autumn.
To move our excursion more, we decided to alternate cycling with trekking. Departure from Arco and arrival in Riva del Garda - passing through Torbole - along the cycle path: there are a few kilometers, but the route is very beautiful and panoramic.
Once you reach the Ponale path, the former connecting road between Riva del Garda and Valle di Ledro, you can go up on foot. The path is easy and very scenic and at every bend or ravine you can stop for a photo. In the first part of the route you will encounter the old Austrian military fortifications of the 19th century: the Tagliata del Ponale.
Climb up the dirt road to the Belvedere Restaurant where you can refresh yourself and enjoy an excellent viewpoint over Lake Benaco. From here, if you want, you can choose some itineraries; we have chosen to go to the Mater Mundi in Pregasina. The path is on an asphalted road only for pedestrians.
ITINERARY
Park the car at the Caneve car park in Arco, take the cycle path to Lake Garda. Once in Torbole, follow the cycle path along the lake until you reach the Riva del Garda hydroelectric power station. Here, head south until you find on the right, before the tunnel, the beginning of the Ponale path. Leave the bike and walk up the dirt road. Arriving at the Belvedere Restaurant, continue on the paved road to the Regina Mundi di Pregasina locality. You return along the same road - 4 hours (1.30 by bike and 2.30 on foot).
