The British Army goes 5.56mm. Here we look at the SA80 family of rifles, a controversial range fo weapons that experienced years of research and development, and a shaky start through its first A1 iteration to becoming a battle-proven design in the form of its A2 and A3 models. This family of rifles has seen considerable service since its adoption in 1985, including the first Gulf War, the Balkans, the Iraq War, and operations in Afghanistan.
In this episode we look at the whole family, the prototypes, the carbines and support weapon variants, examine how these have evolved, and what impact they have had on the British Army soldier.

It’s funny to realise that the British Army seem to be the only army that replaces its standard rifle with a HEAVIER rifle each time, the L85 fully kitted out was heavier than the L1A1 fully kitted out and the L1A1 was heavier than the Lee Enfield No4 that it replaced, maybe one day the MOD will twig to the fact that soldiers might prefer a lighter weapon not a heavier one.
@cwftft4273

It was designed to be heavy weirdly…….. it helps with being able to ram a bayonet through some fuckers rib cage and make the weapon accurate AF 👍🏻

That bayonet was a completely wank bit of kit. It wouldn’t stay on the rifle, but rather than improve the spring they change the training manual,so you had to take a few seconds out of your charge into the enemy, to check you still had the thing on the end of your rifle. The blades would often snap and the lug on the sheath for wire cutter would just break off. That was 30 years ago and it still makes me very cross.

It has to be said that the British first trialed a bullpup design in the 1950s, using an intermediate cartridge. It was pretty OK too by all accounts, however the Americans insisted on the continued use of the 7.62 round and so it had to be scrapped. Then they later decided that the 5.62 should eventually be used and the rest, as they say, is history. A similar thing is happening now with the smooth bore tank gun, although with a little more merit, to be be fair. The shape of the foregrip very reminiscent of that limited production piece in the foreground, except being made from wood.
@cwftft4273
@cwftft4273 Год назад
The 7.62x51 wasn’t replaced because it has more range! Funny thing, it can hit targets at 200-300m as well! 🤦‍♂️ The reason it was replaced is all other NATO countries were changing to 5.56mm, the round weighs less, is smaller and therefore the magazine is smaller and soldiers can clearly carry more ammo, that’s it! Weirdly, due to getting rid of a weapon system and a round that can reach out to 600+, the Army gulped, as unlike you stated, most engagements are 500+! The LSW was there for that, but had been phased out, so they shat it and then UOR’d in The Sharpshooter/ sniper support weapon and reintroduced GPMGs at section level. Also, the SA80 at section level is effective out to 800m, the range you said the Army wasn’t concerned about! The A2 version that HK overhauled wasn’t made to “have a tighter fit” at all! The parts were/ are/ look exactly the same, they are however strengthened, the recoil spring is stronger, giving the bolt carrier and the bolt a stronger return whilst cycling, preventing the silly stoppages that occurred with the A1. That was the reason the cocking handle was designed to deflect the empty cases, as the return was so quick, the old cocking handle was reported to push the cases back into the ejection opening, not back into the chamber! Why on earth do you have iron sights on the carbine? there is no foresight! Why have a blank magazine on the A1 with no BFA? Which have no mag on the LSW? Why no LDS on the A3 and have the wrong mag on it as well? Book smart, but get it right for f*** sake and have some pride and attention to detail eh, or some soldier or veteran might call you out on social media 😉

Not a mention of the EM Series of Rifles first trialled in the 1950’s. Having fired one of those weapons I can categorically state that it was simple & robust although the smaller round would have been found wanting. A fuller R&D program may have given us a truly advanced weapon ahead of its time. Enfield … not Royal Ordnance or any MoD contractor created the “SA 80” by taking parts of the original Armalite design … this was intended as a cheap, easy to produce export rifle suitable for Forces such as those in smaller Commonwealth Nations. Somehow, somewhere down the line, somebody, in the Defence Procurement Process managed to get the Enfield product into the defence trials cycle. That individual made themselves a very comfortable future upon retirement as Enfield were swallowed up by BaE. Thus the MoD was saddled with an inferior rifle that was never designed or envisaged to become a general issue service battle rifle. The rest … for those of us that used it through its various iterations from the SA 80 through to the A3 variant - is a painful history. These two clowns are knobheads.

One small point, Adam says that the rifle was late into service as SA80 stands for Small Arms 1980 but I believe that in publications I seen at the time it meant Small Arms for the 80's. Funny that at its introduction we were discouraged from calling it the SA80 and had instead to call it the Rifle 556. Now it seems that SA80 is acceptable again. Even though it is an accurate, reliable weapon now it is still (butt) heavy and clunky in my opinion - although I may be biased as I have never been keen on bullpups.
@jamiemarsden3823
@jamiemarsden3823 Год назад
bullpup hold 3 crucial perks over other weapons as follows 1: faster reload in any position especially 'full prone' 2: shorter overall length allows better overall weapon control and carry capacity 3: less recoil allowing better accuracy at mid ranges beyond 600 and up-to 800 other than that the british bullpup is a major heap of dogshit. Doesn't make any sense why the uk mil always fuck their men/women over when it comes to their tools ffs WE HAVE THE BEST OF THE BEST and still lack the proper tools for the fucking job!! fuck it brit soldier rolls in with his banana in hand shouts bang bang and still gets the fucking job done! :)

Yep - never called it an SA80...ever. Gat, bondook, shooter, weapon, rifle etc etc....apart from the LSW which was called the "Crow piece or Crow cannon" because it was heavy as fk and all the sprogs got it....including me!. It was unheard of for a Crow to get a rifle when they got to their platoon in a rifle company, Pl Sgt soon sorted the orbat out so the new guy got the LSW 😂 I remember that rifle being a piece of crap, the cocking handles fell out and usually got lost. Gas parts would regularly fly out of the gas block. I've had some horrendous stoppages with it. Just as I was getting out around late 2000, most of the internal working parts had been HK upgraded, those locking splines had to be kept spotless. One grain of sand in there and it just didn't work.

The Austrians and the French managed to make their bullpup type 5.56 rifles ambidextrous to be fired right- or left-handed and thereby respecting and acknowledging the about 10% of shooters whose dominant eye (and hand / arm) happen to be the left one - the Brits didn't and don't. That's very disappointing and arrogant. I've used both the French FAMAS and the Austrian AUG and like them both. The conservative SA 80 (only saved by Heckler % Koch after its initial poor performance) not so much. I respect my left master eye and my left, experienced trigger finger too much. By the way, your L1.A1 SLR was a formidable battle rifle. I've used a couple of them too extensively. (Ex Norwegian Infantry)

To be fair, most people who join the UK military have little or no firearms experience. They get trained to use it right handed and as they may well be all they have every known it is not a huge issue. In my 20 years service I never met anyone for whom it was a deal breaker. People who have never used also complain about the ergonomics but you can muscle memory that away. I did see a left hand fire version very early on, but they never made many and they disappeared as it was felt they weren't needed.

@@Chaddlee Point taken. But anyone taking shooting seriously should start by finding out which eye is their master eye and take it from there. I consider Armys to take shooting seriously. People are different and about 10% are left-handed and have been so since their childhood. Most 'bullpup' designs are / can be ambidextrous - just not the British one. It speaks for itself in my opinion.

@@stormhansen1499 the vast majority of the weapon was designed in the 40's and 50's don't forget. You might forgive weapon designers at Thornycroft their flaws but you could also assume they may have learnt a thing or two during the 6 years of total war they had just come out of.

@@Chaddlee hi, I was in when we converted from the slr, as a left handed and shooter I hated it for many reasons, not just shooting right handed, but it was cheap and unreliable. I can see your point about training everyone to be right handed, but the flaw in the design does not allow you to adopt your rifle to the conditions, you have to adopt to the rifle and this can mean exposing yourself unnecessarily to fire. Sad, I do wish they would resolve this as other countries have and I do believe we have British engineers who could design this feature.

Apparently none of the team that designed the SA-80 had any previous firearms experience, and when they started having problems the team kept blaming the people using the weapon and basically stated that the research and figures said the rifle worked and the people trialling it must be doing something wrong, they didn’t even think to ask Sterling for help even though it was the operating system from the AR-18, that Sterling were producing under license, that the designers had “borrowed”for the SA-80.
