It was in Leningrad, where Semyon Bychkov first encountered Mahler's music. This transformative experience occurred unexpectedly during his school years, forever altering his perception and approach to music. "I was so mesmerized. I had absolutely no idea what I was hearing. All I knew is that it took me into a role that I have never experienced to the point that I forgot to go back to the next class."
In the last edition of the Philharmonius podcast, Bychkov explored how Mahler’s music often serves as a deeply personal and autobiographical reflection of the composer, mirroring the existential struggles and intimate emotions of Mahler himself.
He shared insights into the complex interplay between the composer's life experiences and his compositions, emphasizing how historical giants of music like Mahler are both deified and deeply human, struggling to convey their inner worlds through their art.
Bychkov highlighted the Czech Philharmonic’s intrinsic connection to Mahler, expressing that performing Mahler with this orchestra feels like a spiritual homecoming to the music’s emotional and cultural origins. „The sonority of the orchestra is exactly the kind that his music really needs. I believe certain things cannot be explained, but they can be felt. And so for me personally, this is an ideal orchestra for the music of Gustav Mahler,“ explains Semyon Bychkov.
The interview was conducted by composer Ian Mikyska.
