They definitely have a very good designer in Wolfgang Egger. The only compact / mid size SUV design that I have seen for a while that I actually like.

I will correct you regarding BYD's Disus suspension system. Disus is actually a family of different types of active suspension, and the Sea Lion's Disus C is the lowest and cheapest version, and is really just software controlled active dampers on top of a conventional steel spring type suspension. So a pretty basic setup. Next level up is Disus A, which is a more advanced air suspension, which will be mostly offered on BYD's premium sub-brand Denza, such as the Sea Lion sister car, the Denza N7. The one you show a video of is actually Disus P, which is BYD's most advanced active suspension, and can do some crazy stuff such as keeping the car level even if one tire has blown out, or for their SUVs, Disus P allows for independent ride height adjustment at each corner. But Disus P (and a track variant Disus X, which is powerful enough to propel the entire car into the car from a stand still) will only be offered in BYD's new halo ultra luxury brand Yangwang.

Do you know if the Disus C suspension is the option available in the Seal performance car in Australia? Personally, I don't like full air suspension. It's a gimmick in my opinion, no better than well designed mechanical suspension and prone to frequent failure.

@@vasil7410 Apparently the hardware for Disus C was already built into certain BYD models, and then BYD just sent Disus C out as an OTA update. But for some reason it was for the older BYD Han and Tang. I did not see Seal mentioned. But I reckon if the Sea Lion, on the same platform as the Seal, will get Disus C, then perhaps Seal will get it too at some point.

Hence the price. Since it won't be made in North America, it won't qualify for American incentives, so the price has to be lower. The jury is still out on whether Americans will buy Chinese made cars. We'll see. I think BYD's goal is to bankrupt Detroit 3...haven't been the big three for decades....again, jury is still out

@@Infidel307 You’re reading this on a Chinese made phone, tablet, PC, laptop, or TV. Americans already buy most of their manufactured products from China. As for BYD’s plans….they have no plans to enter the American market because of the tariff. Detroit is the last thing on their mind. They are too busy building factories in Asia, South American and soon, Europe. BYD EV sales matched Tesla in October and are growing faster. They will be the #1 selling EV company by December, if not already.

My rideshare in Thailand yesterday was a BYD Dolphin. $25k USD here. Quality interior, more legroom than I expected. Owner loves it. I think the Dolphin will sell like crazy. I’m already seeing them every day and it’s only been out for a matter of months. By 2026 when Tesla releases their $25k car, the Dolphin will be ubiquitous.

Charging is also important, many Chinese cars already has 480 kw charging, but any of those are not available in europe. Still waiting.

Hey Sam, Luke Todd has indicated that the large SUV coming is the one already seen on Australian roads. The camouflaged shape appears to be the Seal U rather than the Sea Lion. This has been mentioned to arrive in Aus around Q2 2024. Based on the experience that occurred when the Atto3 was released and the negative press surrounding drip feeding of initial supply, EV direct are going down the path of waiting for production ramp to ramp up to sufficient levels before releasing to Aus. That is why orders for the dolphin and seal only opened about 18 months after the initial unveiling. Looks like the Sea Lion won’t be in Aus till mid 2025 at the earliest, but damn if the Sea Lion order books are opened mid 2024, it would be awesome. Also the mid 2024 release of the seal U would correspond to about 18 months after the unveiling of the Song plus champion in China. 1:21 On the topic of pinyin pronounciation, any Chinese name with Zhou to an English speaker is Joe. Hence it should be pronounced guang-joe, not guang-zoo. As this is based on the 3.0 architecture, this should have better efficiency and internal room compared with the Seal U because the latter is based on a platform that has the PHEV option.

Twelve to eighteen months is about the time it takes for BYD to tool up the right hand drive production lines following initial left hand drive production, so this is probably the reason.

Im impressed. I like the shape of the Ioniq 6 but have issues with the driving range and battery chemistry. BYD Sea Lion appears to have a similar shape but better battery chem and excellent driving range. The price is also very attractive.

I prefer the looks of the Song L but this would also be an appealing car. My worry about byd is they seem to be saturating the market with lots of different models rather than work at perfecting 4 or 5. (I have a seal on order)

I also prefer the Song L but would also be happy to get the Sea Lion in Thailand. The Sea Lion looks better than the Seal U. I bought the Dolphin because I don't like the (interior of) the Atto 3.

@ Seal U and Song L are both poorly named. The Seal U is really just a facelifted version of the BYD Song Plus, which rides on BYD's older generation PHEV platform. The Song L, on the other hand, has nothing in common withe Song Plus, and rides on BYD's brand new pure EV ePlatform 3.0 just like all their other new cars (Seal, Dolphin etc). Actually Sea Lion, Song L, and Denza N7 are essentially the same car, just each one is slightly more expensive and luxurious than the other.

​​@@tren133Yes, whilst there are some common "ocean themed" styling cues, the Song L and Sea Lion have similar body shape to each other and quite different to the Song Plus and Seal U pair. IMO, the Song Plus / Seal U are just generic looking mid sized SUVs, in other words quite ugly.

Electric Viking, long time subscriber with a video idea for you! E-BIKES and E-TRIKES are incredibly popular and low-cost. My experience indicates the expensive batteries seem to degrade fairly quickly. Today I did a search to learn that an e-bike battery commonly needs to be replaced after 2 or 3 years (!!!🤬). Can they make e-bike batteries that last a decade or more like in an electric car or is it something in the electric car's battery management system that gives it the much-longer expected life? Have you heard of any e-bike batteries that are vastly superior to the rest?

This needs to be aggressively priced in the UK as BYD have a small dealer network with no local history. MG took years to build their dealer network and were always the cheapest in the market - BYD will need to do the same.

Hi Sam. This is likely the vehicle I'm waiting for to replace my recently destroyed Model Y following my accident October 1st. I've initially earmarked the new Juniper version of the Model Y but if this BYD arrives in the next 12 months, I'll likely go for it, or the 2024 Song L. Just wish BYD would drop the stupid names and use maybe Atto 4, 5 or 6 instead. At lease it doesn't say BUILD YOUR DREAMS on the rear!

It's a good strategy, to undercut the Model Y, even if it ends up being a loss leader for them this could really give them market share. Better looking than a Y in my opinion. Nice interior too. ALso lately every time Musky opens his mouth I think the best thing for Tesla would be if he wasn't involved in the brand anymore.

It will be interesting to see the price when it reaches Europe. For instance, a BYD Seal AWD sells in this market for €52k, about the same price as a Model Y Standard Range. Saw the first one on the road today, running on trade plates. Let's see how it does at that level. Thanks for the video.

This EV looks spectacular! However, I am a little confused. This Sea Lion 07 looks like a sibling of the just released BYD Song L. What is the major difference between the two models?

Sea Lion 07 is essentially just a slightly cheaper and less stylish Song L, which in turn is a slightly cheaper and less stylish Denza N7, but really the Sea Lion/Song L/N7 are all closely related to each other. The N7 does have a major upgrade in that unlike the BYDs, the N7 is available with Disus A air suspension.

@rescuehelly271 Song L is actually 190k to 25ok RMB, but that was a surprise to everyone because it was a massive 30k RMB less than its presale price starting at 220k. Sea Lion has not been released yet so we don't know the price, but the assumption has always been the Sea Lion will be cheaper than the Song L. Just looking at the two cars you can see the Sea Lion is meant to be the cheapest mainstream model, while the Song L is supposed to be the more coupe looking premium sporty model. As a result the Sea Lion is taller and more roomy inside, meant to be sold to families in large numbers, while the Song L will be sold in relatively lower numbers at higher prices. Which would mean the Sea Lion should come in at lower than 190k RMB. That's crazy low pricing, and BYD is not messing about with this launch.

You mention Australia quite often , did you notice how things changed? Now Australia is procucer of raw materials, low tech economy that send for example coal to China and in exchange receive crispy hi tech cars.

BYD is RIP here in the Philippines. Nobody is buying them. Biggest complaint with BYD dealerships are delays in service up appointments, limited availability of parts and poor service overall.

If they price it like the Seal in Australia it could be a big seller. Unlike the EU and UK, Seal priced at around US $32,000 (around Au $50K) so if under Au$60K for base, as an SUV it could be what makes it here in Australia. Just too bad about the Chinese style interior. They need an international focused interior, maybe something more like Mazda.

Audi have made the best car interiors for a while now, and the guy at BYD is ex-Audi so as long as he gets design input, he could move the interior up a notch or two. Funnily enough, the more you do when designing, the worse it ages.

I'd bet at least £50K in the UK. All BYDs are overpriced. The Atto 3 is more expensive than a Model 3 - and the sales reflect that as you've previously reported.

Electric motors have far fewer moving parts than internal combustion engines. This means electric cars often require far less maintenance (and can be cheaper to operate) than their gas-burning counterparts. Still, EVs require regular maintenance.

I wonder what is the equivalent cost of a gas model cost in china but I don’t think $ 35,000 for a car is really cheap in china. China’s gdp per capital is 12,500 after tax and retirement most probably have 10,000/year, imagine spending 3.5 years of your income on a car, that is a lot.

Well there is a reason BYD's top selling car is the Seagull, which sells for the equivalent of just 10k USD, and BYD can hardly keep up with demand, since it it now selling 40,000 Seagulls EVERY MONTH.

My guess is that came out with a super low price to make a big splash.... As people stop buying them they will end up in the prices. Tesla could lower their prices to match but the sales are still strong why would they?

How does BYD and the other Chinese brands go for reliability, durability, suspension, handling, safety, servicing and parts-availability for the likely lifetime of the car? There's more to a car than motors and batteries. Have these brands ironed out all the problems yet or should we wait a few more years for early-adopters to do the beta-testing for us?

The RAV4 is starting to look a bit old now. Needs a design pull-through if it goes to EV. Toyota dragging their EV feet, so don't hold your breath. First with Hybrid, nearly last with electric. They've largely missed the boat like most Japanese manufacturers. Too much dithering I'm afraid.

Doesn't matter what battery they have if they can't manage it. BYD Atto 3 and Seal charge at 80 kW afaik while Tesla charge at 170 with a flat curve.

Price is low because they are not exactly model Y level in software and safety level. They know that. If they are they would ask a much higher price than they are now. Different client base. Model Y is for managers and sea lions are for the clerks.

I’m sure BYDs are very safe but they haven’t beat model Y in that area yet as far as I know. If you have a different statistic please prove me wrong. I am willing to be educated. ​@@inclusivelove5165 BYD isn't bringing cars to North America due to protectionist policies. That and that alone is the reason they have not tested in the US. Be assured that cars that have scored 5 stars in every crash test they have been up against will have no problem with US crash tests. It is like saying a car not sold in China is unsafe because it hasn't passed crash tests there... Model Y's are for oblivious fanbois who do not know better.
