Wow, I remember one day when I was six years old my uncle came and picked me up from my parents house.he knocked on the door and my mother answered then yelled for me telling me that my uncle and cousin were here and that they wanted to take me (living in. Mt View)so we left not knowing wHere we were heading. It was a little over cast and grey foggy topical bay area weather. We head up 101 towards SF and we get off the Candlestick exit. There was a NINER game going on but didn't have tickets. So we drove as close as we could to the stadium and got out. I remember hearing loud cheers coming out of Candlestick. I was like, this is cool.and it was loud. Then my uncle turns to my cousin and me and says" that's where Joe Montana is playing" it just so happened that it was the 81' NFC Championship game (the catch) against the Cowboys. ..That's when I became part of the NINER FAITHFUL! !!!!go NINERS!!! Gonna miss Candlestick so much.
Grew up watching Giants games at "The Stick"! First memory is walking through the doors on the lower reserves and seeing how green the grass was and how it was nothing like in TV. Bat day, Fan Appreciation Day, Willie McCovy Day, Doubleheaders, and the swirling winds are the things I miss the most about the place. Great memories!!
...long before Joe Montana & Steve Young, there was John Brodie...whom guided the 49ers to 3 straight Western Division Crowns (which included 2 NFC Championship appearances). ...aside from the '49 & '57 campaigns, San Francisco (even with the great Y.A. Tittle at the helm) were often dreadful or, average at best no matter where they played. ...I'm not a 49ers fan...however, I was a huge fan of number "12" and find it rather confusing that a local San Francisco television station can bid "Farewell To Candlestick Park" and not show a single highlight reel or even one picture of the great John Brodie. ...after all, he was the first quarterback to win at Candlestick.
As the 49ers were winning the championship game to go to the Super Bowl tonight I couldn't stop thinking about Candlestick. I couldn't stop thinking about how that whole area is now just a barren silent field. Almost all traces of the great stadium are gone and now the 49ers are going to the Super Bowl. It feels strange. I haven't forgotten you Candlestick.❤
"Unfortunately," Candlestick is to be demolished? I've lived in San Francisco for four decades and I love The City, but San Franciscans sometimes have an inflated position of themselves. Candlestick Park was an ugly, windy dump. Yes, there were some great memories like the Giants' occasional pennants and the 49ers' thrilling Super Bowl victories, but it wasn't because their great moments were in something sacred. It was an ugly,windy dump. Thank Goodness, now the Giants have a real palace, the best ballpark in the Majors.
