Projekt Slussen 1935! Now that Slussen is being rebuilt for the fifth time, i thought it would be fun to see how it looked when the old Karl-Johan lock was built. We get to experience the demolition of the old buildings and the construction of the roundabout, restaurant Gondolen and the new Katarinalift among other things. And finally the opening by King Gustaf V on Oct 15th 1935.
In the 1920s, the so-called "Slussen Misery" emerged. Both boat and car traffic increased and Slussen was the only path for boats that would pass the city in an east-west direction and for cars in a north-south direction. At bridge openings, cars could queue for several hours and the trams waited in long lines. The people of Stockholm jokingly said that if you went into the "Slussen Misery" with a new and modern car, you came out with an old and outdated one.
In 1930 a committee was appointed with the task of solving this and other city traffic problems. In 1931 a total overhaul of Slussen was funded. Buildings were demolished, the new Karl-Johan lock was built, and a cloverleaf interchange. Pedestrian tunnels and walkways were built on three different levels. The Slussen project was praised as "the modern era's first large project".
The footage has been remastered to 4K 60 frames per second using various AI and software. Sound has been carefully added manually for ambiance and finally the images has been colorized using AI to present this time travel experience.
This is an artistic interpretation of the original footage and is by no means intended to replace the original film and its historical value.
The color and sound is NOT historically accurate and it is added for ambiance.
