Good ole Bystander episode had us going dicaprio pointing meme so hard.

The manga shows that Keith was trying to apologize to Carla and that the reason he broke Eren's belt was because he was thinking about Carla's feelings for Eren. I wish they had included these things in the anime as well.

The first time I read the panel where Carla called Eren special because he was born into this world, I remember I cried my eyes out lmao Such a good episode!

Seeing the weight lifted off of Eren's shoulders here when he learns what his mom said about him is one of the best moments of the series. Given what's to come, it's especially important to cherish that.

Keith Shadis gets a lot of stick, but he really is a tragic figure who acted for the best when he tried to keep Eren out of the Survey Corps.

This is low-key one of my favorite episodes of the show. It deals with heart and why we live. It hits harder the older you get and realize why you choose to live the way you do and why.

The soft/gentle part of Shinzou wo Sasageyo! when Carla talks about everyone in the world beeing special simply for existing hits so hard. The music in this show is just the best.

The way revelations of info connect the dots between seasons of this show is still why this show is so great! And then there are more questions even after a huge reveal xD

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes of the entire show. I love the final scene! There is so much character development for Keith, Carla and Eren in 30 seconds. It's insane.

Knowing you're already in season 4: In my eyes, Grisha's claim that he had lost his memories was just a lie. He never forgot anything and just said that to blend in better.

One of my favorite episodes in the whole show. When Carla says how Eren is special just because he was born into this world, it feels like it encompasses the entire show’s point.

I remember seeing his Dad have the key on him when he left in the first episode and was confused for years why Eren had it after the wall was destroyed. Years. Waited years for the explanation and it was so satisfying

I love that Erwin's squad was Hange, Levi, Mike, and Nanabi. Sad that when Keith says special people do exist the ones looking back are Erwin, Levi and Hange, while Mike and Nanabi are partially obscured, as they are already gone by this point in the telling.

It still blows me away that Sugita Tomokazu (Gintoki) played Marlo and Ono Kensho (Kuroko/ Giorno) played Floch. Like, these are A-listed voice actors and in here they are just side characters.

We are at the pivotal point of episodes everyone has been waiting for.

This is what i was waiting for. The little things in the first few episodes turns out to be revelations two seasons later. Like Eren’s defective gear. This is why i love this series. Questions are answered and the simple things will be significant later. I rewatched the series just to see the little hints here and there.

Carla words always make me cry in this Episode

Keith loved Carla, so he broke the metal fittings on Eren's belt to keep her son Ellen from dying outside the wall. He wanted to cherish Carla's love for her son. In the manga, Keith's thoughts were clearly expressed, but these were omitted in the anime.

"is it wrong not to be special" isnt what you should take away from this, thats cope for mediocrity. But rather "he (you) are already special, because he was born into this world" and achieve whatever you want to achieve whether or not you were given superior talents/capabilities. Notice how 'because I was born into this world' becomes a key motivation/justification going forward for Eren.

It was very late in the evening and Eren was sleeping too when Grisha came to ask where Carla was, so Mikasa was probably sleeping too when that happened so she's not in on it or something lol. With that broken belt, Keith was trying to stop Eren from becoming a soldier because he thinks Grisha "cursed" his son like he did Keith by making Eren think he is somehow special and that believing that he, Eren, is special will only "burn himself out outside the walls" like it did with Keith. Eren being able to pass the "test" doesn't necessarily mean he is special (in the sense Keith describes it), Keith just curses himself, due to being a bystander, that he wasn't able to stop someone similar from going down the same path as he did in his younger years.

You want to be the hero of the story, but it's way more likely you end up to be a bystander, just like Shadis. This is low-key one of my favorite episodes in how it gets humbling and I am a sucker for good support roles.
