At the installation of our new Priest in Charge of the local Anglican Parish Church, we have 'In Christ Alone' and 'THE LINE' was changed to read: 'Til on the Cross, when Jesus dies, The Love of God was magnified' I like that change! My wife is organist at our (URC/Presbyterian) church and one of two organist at a nearby Anglican Church and would agree with Cole that people can be very sensitive to lyrics - and tunes - not least me! (We had a debate about the last line of verse 3 of Thine be The Glory this lunchtime!)
In response to the point Jacob made toward the end of this video, the idea the majority of evangelicals tend to have is that God’s covenant people in the OT still had faith, and so even though the blood of bulls and goats wasn’t enough, they unknowingly had faith in the true Sacrificial Lamb to the extent that the blood of bulls and goats was pointing to Him, so in that context, they wouldn’t end up in hell forever … and, of course, though there is some truth in this (at least with the whole faith bit minus the eternal hell bit), it’s not so much that Jesus is saving us because we believe, but is saving us so that we ultimately can believe and come alive in faith.
