"I was very diligent all this entire time - it was my most productive year," wrote Robert Schumann in 1849 in a letter to Ferdinand Hiller. This was the year that saw him compose the Three Romances for oboe and piano op. 94, which Robert presented to his wife Clara as a Christmas gift. And the choice of the oboe was no coincidence, since the composer loved the instrument.
The French oboist Céline Moinet presents a selection of works written by Schumann for the oboe or which were specially arranged for the instrument. "I took the liberty of transposing some works for my own instrument, although oboists of Schumann's era had already discovered his oeuvre for themselves," explains the artist. "The oboist Emilius Lund (1830-1893) performed his Three Romances op. 94 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig in 1863 with Carl Reinecke at the piano. He also arranged and published versions of 'Träumerei' and 'Am Kamin' from Schumann's Kinderszenen (1838) for the oboe."
Clara Schumann too composed Romances (op. 22), originally for violin and piano, but which lend themselves equally well to the oboe. And there is a wonderful arrangement by Theodor Kirchner of Robert Schumann's Studies for the Pedal Piano op. 56, which brings together the oboe, cello and piano.
And it is Schumann's Lieder and lyric gems that are lent a completely unique new colouring thanks to the oboe's timbre. Even though there are no lyrics to this version for oboe and piano - the poetry comes out fully in any case - this is clearly a declaration of love set to music: "My lovely star! I beg you, / Do not fall to the Earth, / Because you see me here below, / Instead, lift me up to heaven, / My lovely star, where you already are!"
Piano - Florian Uhlig
Oboe - Céline Moinet
For the past ten years, Céline Moinet has been one of the most exceptional performing artists on her instrument. The young oboist’s concerts bring both audiences and critics alike to rapturous applause.
Céline Moinet is in demand as a soloist with all the major orchestras in the world. She has played at the Salzburg Easter Festival under Christoph Eschenbach, with the Staatskapelle Dresden, at the Pacific Music Festival under Fabio Luisi and with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra in Suntory Hall. She also regularly tours solo with the Dresden Kapellsolisten and the Kammerorchester Basel.
Céline Moinet was born in Lille, France in 1984 and completed her studies with highest honours at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique under the tutelage of David Walter and Maurice Bourgue. She continued her artistic training with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and the orchestra of the National Theater Mannheim. At just 23 years of age, Céline Moinet won the prestigious position of solo oboist at the Staatskapelle Dresden. Since then, she has performed with conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Zubin Mehta, Claudio Abbado and Andris Nelsons. She is also a regular guest of orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Céline Moinet is signed with harmonia mundi as an exclusive artist. Her recordings, with works for solo oboe and chamber music with oboe and harp, have been praised by the critics and have achieved outstanding sales for the French, German and British record industries. As a result, Céline Moinet was invited by renowned TV Network Arte and Rolando Villazón to appear on the show “Stars of Tomorrow”.
Since 2013, Céline Moinet has had a chair at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music and she conducts master courses in France, Germany and Japan.

I agree with what others have already stated: Celine Moinet has THE BEST tone / sound production on this magnificent instrument. She makes the oboe sound absolutely captivating. Her tone is gorgeously smooth, velvety, lush, serene. HOW does she do this?!? And her musical expression, intonation, and dynamic range are second to none. Just wonderful!

i’ve been listening to this on repeat as i’m learning the 1st and 3rd movements and i have never heard an oboe be played this well. i’ve known so many oboists but no one compares to how she connects every note almost like a string player. she’s amazing

If you like the way she plays, that is perfect, I recommend listening to Leleux, he is the best.

Learning these two on clarinet too and this is an absolute reference for me. You're right she connects notes perfectly. And this is a huge thing to manage on clarinet too. For big intervals, some pros "cut" the air in order to avoid some weird glissendo and it's done in such a short time that you hear legato notes.

I definitely prefer everything from Celine Moinet - tone, musicality, phrasing, dynamic range. But if I had to put it down to one single thing it would be her incomparably beautiful, angelic TONE!! I've never heard an oboe sound so beautiful.

@@Xingqiwu387 have you ever listened to Francois Leleux? He plays on the M2 Marigaux oboe and his tone Is similar to Celine's one but he hasn't recorded Schumann's romances yet :(

@@dariodellamico2823 Yes, many times, and I'm especially fond of his phrasing. But in terms of tone itself, Celine Moinet takes the absolute TOP PRIZE. No one compares.

Amazing expressivity and tone, and seemingly effortless. Absolutely inspring. Actually, these Schumann videos with Ms Moinet made me take up and practice on my instrument again after a long hiatus.

A beautiful sound, great beauty of phrasing, seemingly endless breath control, a perfect instinct for the mood of this composition. Bravissimi to oboist and pianist alike.

A couple things here. On the video you can see the oboist breathing at 0:40, 0:48, 1:26, 1:37, 1:44. After that, I gave up looking. People who haven't played the oboe think that the amount of breath needed in phrases matches what it would be by voice. The oboe is lyrical like singing and singing he experience most people are familiar with. So I guess that is probably why assume it carries on to the oboe. But not so. The oboe is conical which is very efficient at projecting sound while using every little air. From a physics standpoint, is a lot of air sloshing *back* and as well as out, so there is a lot of pressure the oboist experiences in playing. More so than in the larger bigger bore instruments like the saxophone, bassoon, English Horn, Oboe d'amore or even the baroque version of the oboe. As an experiment, while playing the passages, I exhaled into taking a (cylindrical) soda straw. I chose that because that is about the size of the opening on the top part of the oboe. The soda straw offers much *less* resistance than what you feel on the oboe. I then tried whistling, and still could could not get it to stretch to 18 seconds. (I can hold my breath for about 45 seconds but it is uncomfortable. Basically something the size of a coffee stirrer or maybe those narrow plastic tubes like you find on WD-40 aerosol cans, are more like the resistance one gets. Look at the opening of ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i7qR9WTN328.html and you can see the oboist playing the entire time and notice how he does the first entire passage of about 18 seconds in one breath. That passage is about the same length 18 or 19 seconds. When the teacher is singing the same passage notice how many breaths takes for half of the passage. The breath thing, distracts from the parts that I think are notable and unique in the performance. First, this tempo is a little slower than many take it. But it feels right here - more like a romance between the oboe and piano. What I find amazing is how both performers change tempo and dynamics in lock step. A clear example of how the two work in harmony as one I think can be heard at 2:39. Listen to how the bass line of the piano in contrary motion to the ascending line of the oboe mesh nicely together and how both crescendo into that line in sync. As with ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MFPKXMERZjM.html a very nice performance with ensemble and performer working together well. (The opening passage there is 12 seconds without a breath, but the Oboe d'amore is a larger instrument so the air flow out faster.
