One of the oldest elves ever to roam Middle-earth, Círdan the Shipwright is also one of the wisest. Despite his greatest desire to see Valinor, his fate would be to help others make the trip before he would finally sail in the Last Ship himself.
He would see both Morgoth and Sauron rise and fall, and rise again. His incredible foresight leads him to gift his Ring of Power, Narya, to Gandalf.

Imagine giving the ring of fire to one who loves the waters 😐
@mancamiatipoola
@mancamiatipoola 2 года назад
That is so, but also he gave the ring of fire to a worthy person because he really did not need it. The ring of fire was made to amplify destructive powers and to aid in combat. Cirdan was a shib builder and an architect. He was a great creator and had no use for a destructive tool. Now, if they had given him the ring of water...well, he might have kept that one. :)
@Freedmoon44
@Freedmoon44 2 месяца назад
@@mancamiatipoolawell he needed it de facto to provide Elves Hope and delay their end on middle earth, him being the single greatest hope of the elves means that his ring brought the most hope etc... But Gandalf he knew would one day give courage to the men (like in Minas Tirith) and would also give courage to himself in part due to the Ring, which is an effectively better use of the Ring. However no matter which Ring he wouldnt have hesitated, his heart was looking West Valinor was where his heart was, no matter how much he looked at middle earth, its never been his duty to protect Middle Earth, fight the Darkness etc... his duty is to make sure all those who wishes to leave for Valinor and are accepted there does leave, he didnt need any Ring, any power to acheive his duty, he already had the power to do that, and his greatest wish, to cross to Valinor was always going to eventually be acheived, and no Power in Middle Earth not even the One Ring could allow him to reach Valinor against the wishes of the Valar. He has no need for power, thus there are no need for hesitation so long as he knows who Gandalf is and what he will do

In terms of him being "Shipwright the Shipwright," there's at least one other character referred to this way. Legolas Greenleaf means "Greenleaf Greenleaf." It would convey the meaning and the person's identity to those who don't speak Elvish.

Cirdan enabled the Elven diaspora from Middle Earth, he helped to build the last Elven safe havens in the late First Age (of the Sun) when Morgoth's armies were running amok in Beleriand, he built the Gray Havens, he redirected the first Numenorian Army in the Second Age when Sauron threatened to take over all of Eriador and the north-west of Middle Earth and thus saved Gil-Galad's people from Sauron, he also gave Gandalf the Elven Ring of Fire which helped ensure Gandalf's mission became a success. And above all else he suffered sea-longing for tens of thousands years, he watched hundreds of thousands of Elves leave Middle Earth while he stayed behind and he STILL made sure to provide the last ever boat to set sail to Valinor and ONLY then did he at last sail to the undying lands. He was there from the beginning of his race and was there when Elves left Middle Earth entirely. Legend!

I'm a huge Tolkien fun and I found out about this channel only 1 month ago. I've already watched all your videos related to great characters, but I was wondering why nothing was told about Cirdan in a dedicated video. And here It Is !!! Great job, you are a wonderful story teller.

Would love to see a video on Halbarad and the Rangers of the North who come to Aragorn’s aid in Return of the King. We get so know so little about that group and their lives from the books and basically nothing from the movies.

Cirdan epitomizes the virtues of faithfulness and selflessness. He kind of reminds me of someone who gets stuck holding open a door as people keep streaming by. Though I’m sure that he was happy and fulfilled in aiding others to go to their reward, I suspect that each sailing must have been tinged with weariness as it was not yet his turn.

Every time I see the maps in videos like this I'm curious about the "little" things depicted, like castles, towers or various others names of rivers, lakes, small mountains, small patches of woods, etc. I guess not literally everything has something to talk about, but it still intrigues me.

I can just imagine the look on Cirdan’s face once he finally gets to see “white shores, and beyond them a far green country into a swift sunrise.” I can imagine it would be a complicated mix of happiness and relief.

As someone, who hasn't read the books, I wonder how there didn't seem to be any animosity or a sense of betrayal between Celebor and Galadriel, since the latter more or less "abandoned" the former for the time being, when she boarded the ship without him... Do you think there was a mutual understanding, that they'd someday meet again in Valinor, when the time was right and it's just a "mortal-thing" to think otherwise? ;) Also, brilliant, or shall I say "mithril-like" content, I love how you make one feel as if you were talking about real ancient history, looking forward to the next one
@AnnaMarianne

Tolkien wrote that for the Elves it was normal for the husband and wife to spend even long periods of time separatedly, as they pursued their own goals. Galadriel and Celeborn lived apart already earlier, in the Second Age. So when Galadriel chose to pass over the Sea before Celeborn did, from the Elvish point of view that would be normal and acceptable. That said, you can hear from Celeborn's words to Aragorn in RotK that he is saddened by Galadriel leaving already, as it would be a while until they would see again.

Elvish chieftains Nowë and Lenwë was with Elwë and Olwë when Orome met with the first Children of Iluvatar in Cuivienen. In the Sundering of the Elves, Lenwë found refuge in the ancient forest of Greenwood and his faction became the wood elves. His descendants were Thranduil and Legolas. Elwë later known as Thingol married Melian the Maia. Luthien was their daughter. Nowë settled in the Falas. A friend to the Maia Ossë (personification of the ocean waves), he later became known as Cirdan the Shipwright.

Nowë Círdan and his life is inspiration to all people. World would be better place if there is more man like him. 12:22 Gil-galad looks like: " That's not good, I don't like it." I like your videos. 26.7.2021 I was watching some Thranduil's videos and accidentally found The Complete Thranduil's travels, so I decided to watch it. During time I watched videos from your channel, I learned some new information, especially in this video. Círdan was one of most mysterious Elves for me, before you made this video and I watched it.

Off topic from Cirdans amazing character, but one of my favorite illustrations from all of your videos is when you describe Morgoths forces at 7:15 as sad as it was for the elf’s, I can’t help but think how badass Morgoths forces were compared to Sauron’s orcs of the third age.
