¿Cómo se dice en inglés?: Hay una caja. There is a box.
En español se expresa existencia con el verbo impersonal haber al decir “hay”
En inglés se expresa lo mismo con la palabra “there” más alguna forma del verbo “to be”,
como is o are
There is a box.
¿Cómo se dice? "Hay 2 cajas” There are 2 boxes (2)
Cuando se expresa existencia con “haber” en español, el verbo permanece en singular:
hay
En inglés no es así. El verbo cambia si decimos que existe más de una cosa.
There are 2 boxes
There is someone there. Hay alguien ahí.
La palabra “there” cuando expresa existencia, no significa “ahí”
“There” solo expresa que existe algo, y no tiene una traducción directa.
Es la misma palabra, pero con diferentes significados.
There is a dog in the yard. Hay un perro en el patio.
There are 2 cats in the house. Hay 2 gatos en la casa

There are many reasons. Hay muchas razones.
HABÍA / HUBO
La existencia en pasado se expresa con there was y there were
Recuerda que en español hay y había no cambian para el plural,
mientras en inglés si, el verbo cambia si decimos que existe más de una cosa.
IS y WAS son verbos singulares mientras, ARE y WERE se consideran plural
There was a party Hubo una fiesta
There were many people there. Había mucha gente allí.
“people” es plural en inglés
There was a lot of food. Había mucha comida.
There was a lot of traffic. Hubo mucho tráfico.
There were a lot of trucks. Había muchos camiones.
There were many problems. Hubo muchos problemas.
THERE + TO BE
Se combina “there” con todas las formas de “be” para expresar existencia.
there + are, is, was, were, will be, can be, should be, could be, would be must be, might be, used to be, has to be
Sigamos con el ejercicio, utilizando todas las formas anteriores
There is an apple in the bag. Hay una manzana en la bolsa.
There are four books on the shelf. Hay 4 libros en el estante..

There isn’t any evidence. No hay ninguna evidencia
There was a light on in the hallway. Había una luz encendida en el pasillo.
There were 2 men on the corner. Había 2 hombres en la esquina.
There wasn’t any doubt. No había ninguna duda.
There wasn’t any hot water. No había agua caliente.
There weren’t any witnesses. No hubo testigos
Was there a lot of traffic? ¿Había mucho tráfico?
There will be enough. Habrá suficiente.
There will be leftovers. Habrá sobras.
Will there be anything else? ¿Habrá algo más?
There won’t be any problems. No habrá ningún problema
There would be signs. Habría señales.
There wouldn’t be any mistakes. No habría ningún error.
There can be more than one right answer. Puede haber más de una respuesta correcta.
There could be another reason. Podría haber otra razón.
There could be more to the story. Podría haber más en la historia.
There might be more coffee in the pot. Puede que haya más café en la cafetera.
There may be a delay in the flight. Puede que haya un retraso en el vuelo
There should be a key under the doormat. Debería haber una llave debajo del felpudo.
There must be a mistake. Debe haber un error.
There must be something we can do. Debe haber algo que podamos hacer.
There used to be a lot of fish in this lake. Antes había (solía haber) muchos peces en este lago.
