How to shooting a bottle in studio.
In this video tutorial I explain how to photograph a shiny and transparent object in the studio.
The light for photographing products must take into account the material, the surface and the shape of the object. And when that object is transparent, shiny, opaque and satin at the same time, things get complicated.
In this product photo shooting, the object is made of plastic, but this procedure is also valid for objects made of glass, crystal, or any transparent material. It´s in the position asked for the client. And it´s over a piece of glass, In order to have transparency in the inferior part of the container. This is one of the most important things!
The lighting scheme is made up of a studio strobe in a light box, which is intended to create a vertical reflection, who gonna help us define the cilindrical shape.
Another studio strobe with a honeycomb for the background, and a third studio strobe with a snoot fot to light the top of the object that creates a spot of light, to show the bottle´s transparency
But I´m also create a zone of shadow around the white center in the background with the objective of generate this two black borders, who help us to establish the limits of the object.
If I take out the honeycomb in this strobe, I´m not gonna have this two black lines in the border of the bottle and not gonna have good contrast, because a full lited background will invade all the picture, reducing overall contrast so the idea is generate this two black lines in the borders, that´s the function of the honeycomb
An upper back light is lighting the upper part of the bottle. Because the main light is slighty low, the top of the bottle is dark so this upper strobe lites the top and help us draw the shapes too emphatizing the spout of the bottle.
The camera is a Full-Frame SLR with a 200mm tele. I prefer telephoto lenses to take photos of products because they compress perspective better. By forcing us to work away from the product there is more room to place light sources. Also, if we raise or lower the camera, there will be no major changes in the perspective of the photo. This way, the camera is outside the lighting setup area too, and the work is much more comfortable.
