Part 1 of Catalina 22 "Seanachai" sailing Wando River Charleston SC. Photographer, Storyteller and mate uses GoPro Hero 4 mounted to stern rail, a Panasonic HC-V770 camcorder and Nikon D5100 to document how we get underway from Cooper River Marina, handle the running rigging--including reefing the mainsail, and the paddler, pelicans and points of interest along the way.

Nice music. Nice video. Sailing 101: the boom vang is important- don't hesitate to use it- especially in a light breeze. Don't let the boom bounce around like that- you're dumping all sorts power from the sail. Sheet in the vang, and feel the helm and entire boat respond!

Dear Liz, In these trying times i hope you and yours are safe and healthy. I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your video. I intend to watch all that you have posted. I work in the nursing department at a long term care facility and can't express the calm escape your video provided me. Or how needed it was. But I will confess I wasn't watching the beautiful photography as much as i was trying to watch every move you folks made to actually sail the boat. I have dreamed of sailing since I was a small child. A few months ago I came upon a Catalina 22 needing a home. Now it's in my driveway. I've had so little time since the outbreak. But I drag myself home from work, climb aboard her, and poke and probe around. I know next to nothing about this old girl. Except she is beautiful to me. A childhood dream come true. Heck I'm working on senior citizen status now. Some dreams take a while. Her mast is strapped across her cabin just as she traveled to me. Her boom, tiller and rudder in the garage. Wires, lines, and an overwhelming number of gizmos I'm not sure of the actual purpose of. I joined a sailing club and rented a slip just as this virus hit. So all is on hold. I bought some books and of course watch videos every chance I get. But still she sits stagnant. I watch carefully as you handle the lines and most wonderfully I feel a bit of what she will be like in motion. Doing what she was built to do. And for that I am so thankful for your video. I will be watching them all. Sailing, although a dream, is a mysterious realm to me at this point. Full of unknown tasks and skills yet to be understood . But for someone who has stepped into uncharted territory very little, there is also a childlike excitement as well! Again, thanks for the video.

Wow! Gregory Webster, you have no idea how your comments have touched my heart. Our hope and prayer is for you and all of your colleagues to stay safe and healthy. We are fine here. I can so relate to what you said about having a boat in the driveway and feeling like a kid at Christmas waiting to tear into it and see how it works. We had Seanachai in the driveway for 6 months. Spent more money that I'd like to admit getting her ready to splash day, March 19, 2015. Every day on the boat is a good day...on land, at the dock, but especially sailing. Strongly recommend joining the Catalina 22 Association and reading their publication Mainbrace for excellent technical help. www.catalina22.org

I ran over that bridge 15 times in various Cooper Bridge run. That was some time ago. I actually ran over the first, second, and third and final bridge. Tell us what cameras that you use, as a favor to me.

Hi Tommy Cheshire. Impressed about the bridge run. That's not an easy feat! I'm still trying to sort out the best use of these three cameras: GoPro Hero 4 Silver, Nikon D5100 (still shots), and Panasonic HC-V770 video camera (with external mic). The Captain recently gifted a Hohem ISteady Pro gimbal for the GoPro, and I hope to design an effective Ram Mount system to capture better wide angle sailing shots. If I had a gifted assistant, I'd love to get some drone footage...alas, a girl can dream.

How long you've been sailing? I'm looking to get something small like your cat 22 as my first boat. You look to be around my age, 55, and was wondering how old you were when you first started sailing?

Hello David Tagliaferri. We bought Seanachai in September of 2014, our first launch was 6 months later (time spent getting the 1986 boat ready to sail). In 1986 we had a 18ft. Renken. I remember being on it one time only. But the captain took it out several times. Everything I know about sailing (which could probably fit into the anchor storage compartment) I've learned in 6 years. The captain, on the other hand, is a professional mariner who has more than 40 years experience handling boats. Nevertheless, he's learning something new about sailing a C-22 every time we get underway. We were high school sweethearts who always dreamed about blue water sailing...now we're grandparents in our mid-60s, living a different, but enjoyable, dream!
