Because we use liq N2, and it exist as liquid at temp below -78°C. Also LDA is very strong base, it can only be added to the reaction mixture at a very low temp, otherwise it can be hazardous. That's why we use this temp. Because we use such a low temp, we call LDA kinetic base.
