MRL should market this as "Fortifying Coal"! After the train goes through the tunnel, the coal is now "fortified" with more carbon for greater combustion and BTU's. It's now more valuable than it was on the east side of the tunnel. ;)
MRL was reportedly hoping the rebuilt tunnel would help lower maintenance costs caused by oxygen deprivation to their mid-train helpers in the old tunnel. This sure does not look too different than the old tunnel did as far as "Black Fog" goes. Good catch and video.
@TheMadNorsky You are correct, they did the work on the tunnel in hopes of reducing this problem and for the most part it has worked. I know that the tunnel is now about 500 feet shorter and they raised the ceiling and widened the side of the tunnel for more ventilation.
@RailFanJon Thanks, I believe that that is in part because of the number of units and the length of the tunnel and the fact that even with the upgrades the SD40s still smoke from time to time.
