C - Wind Swept Fields. Blender Days of Type. Blender Tutorial

Inspired by the ‘36 Days of Type’ community project and others like it, the approach will be to use the letters of the English alphabet as a creative constraint combined with a key concept or goal to help explore interesting concepts in motion graphics.
These projects are only one way of doing things that I have found that work in this instance. Questions and comments are welcome below in the hope that we can learn together.
The Letter C.
In this project I wanted to create a simple system for the animation of wind swept fields.
Grassy fields require a different approach in that they behave almost like water. There is the individual motion of each grass or grain stem but whole areas of grass move together when a stronger gust of wind goes by. I wanted to be able to artistically direct the overall windiness of the scene as well as control those gusts of wind. It’s not perfect but it can be as complex as you want to make it and it would work well with the rigged plants of the first tutorial in this series.
Check out my Gumroad page here: gumroad.com/icomdesign
Thanks to Quixel for their model of the grass plant: quixel.com
And thanks to Unreal Engine for supporting Quixel and the wider 3D community: www.unrealengine.com/en-US/
Thanks for watching.

19:50 If you want to change the settings of all the selected winds at once then hold down Alt when you adjust one. They all change. Even when the numbers are all different. You no longer need to delete all but one and then clone that one. And yeah - the whole 21:40 set up drivers is now NOT NEEDED. My new favorite 'shortcut'.

Thanks Neil. Great tip. I'm going to remember that one. I just did a test and it will work while the animation is running which is good for visual feedback. I suppose the minor benefit of a driver is that if your wind objects are not convenient or easy to select then the driver will help.

@@icomdesign Select one > Shift G > Type. Or select the Empty they are parented to and Shift G > Immediate Children. Whoever is in the UI team at Blender HQ deserves a Mega reward. Its hard to improve on brilliant, but they are doing it.

that was very useful, i spent hours with dynamic hair thing for grass trying to move tons of parameters without understanding what it does and then found this video and it saved my life. I saved so much time with this technique that i can use that time rendering my scene on cycles instead of eevee :p thanks !

This is fantastic, could you please explain what's inside your plant Collection? Just a series of objects that make up a single stalk? Thankyou!
@icomdesign
@icomdesign 2 года назад
That's right. Just a small group of single stalks that are all a little different from eachother. Then used in a particle system in the shape of a C.

If you added children particles and they went crazy even after you enabled "regrow", try using clump and it will fix the problem

I don't know if it's possible but it would be nice for those driver empty to be limited in space vertically or to display the value as you don't really know what's the value for strenght / power when moving them up and down and where is the middle (0) and max / min.

thank you so much for this tutorial, i am working on a similar scene now, can you please give an advice - what is the best way to fix the length of the grass, affected by the wind? i have closeups of individual thin-bladed grasses and the movement starts right at the root, it even seems they are moving inside the ground) can it be prevented? can the wind affect only top of the grass and how the strength of the wind can be linked with the parameter of 'grass stiffness'?
@icomdesign
@icomdesign 3 года назад
Good question. Unfortunately, there is no way that I have found to fix these issues with this approach. Force field objects affect the entire particle. It would be great if they had a vertex group option. This way of creating fields of grass is best used in big scenes where you need global control and the viewer doesn’t get to see the base of the plants (too much). When plants are moved by a breeze, they sway and don’t really bend a lot which helps The Wind Force objects are meant to give the illusion of bending plants. For closeups of plants you could incorporate something like the rigged plants from the first video in this series. Using the same plant models you are using in your field setup. Another option is to weight paint your grass plants so the base is not affected and then add a displacement modifier directly to them using the vertex group you just created. The movement will only affect the upper part of the plant which is what you want but it is still limited.
@AstaMuratti
@AstaMuratti 3 года назад
@@icomdesign thank you for your reply, "Wind Effect" video was exceptionally helpful, rigging for me is somehow more obvious process and can be achieved more easily, but i do want to learn how to work with weight paint - i feel it would be a nice solution in this case, i will certainly try to follow your advices and improve my grass fields)

Make sure you rotate your cube object along the X axis towards the negative Y direction and apply the rotation. This has always been a strange issue with Blender that has never been fixed.

'Hair Dynamics' needs to be unselected. And 'Regrow' needs to be selected. If you have this around the wrong way you will get the results you have described. So just double check that.
