A nice c1890 alarm carriage clock, this clock has been purchased at Auction, it’s in good working condition, I am happy with the purchase, this clock is right but there are many Chinese copy’s be careful.
The platform is certainly the original to the movement, no gaps between the two plates no signs of other screw holes and the four screws line up with each other. The screwed on brass part that blots out part of the engraving has been added. I always used Horlacq had no trouble with that and it dries very quick. Some cases as you say are not brass, I have no idea what modern ones are made of. Some I have restored have been bronze you can normally tell by the weight as they are very heavy. I also used brasso to clean every brass part, all screws cleaned de burred polished and if previous blued then re blued. Always new pins cut to size and rounded off. Carriage clocks with Cylinder escapements never keep such good time all due to not have a compensated balance. Looking forward to seeing the restoration.
Yes same as me, we bought a few in & attempted a polish the brass colour came off so we always tread very carefully, I would say they where 1980s , so certainly made to cost,
Yes I have seen many, but this clock im pretty certain it’s genuine a lot of reproduction you will spot quickly, up close and personal this clock does show its age, another thing it did come with the original key which is also a bonus, there are lots of fake carriage clocks about I am very very careful with them. But it’s like anything Antique fakes have been around for hundreds of years,
