Finally! This week's video is all about converting your C3 Corvette from vacuum to electric headlight actuators! Let's get 'er done!
Here is the actuator kit I installed in this video. It cost $649 w/tax & whatnot.

After looking at the wiring diagram. The Dimmer Switch connection is connected to the side of the steering wheel shaft which is easy to see and get too. The plug has a Lt. Green, Tan, and yellow wire on it. The yellow wire is the hot that feeds the dimmer switch. Then the low (Tan) and (High) Lt. Green return and go to the engine bay to the headlights. The yellow wire is continuously hot. You should be able to splice into the yellow wire for the trigger wire and not have a glitch when switching from high to low beam. You will not have to hook trigger wire to side marker light. Will work normal as original. Check it out. I have not hooked mine up yet, but it should work just fine

Thanks so much! I ordered a kit and I got no connectors in the kit. This is the harness and the wires I got. Maybe you know what connectors in the light switch to connect them to? I was going to upload a picture, but RU-vid doesn't provide for that. If I had an email address, I could send it to you. Anyway, at the end of the dual harness that connects to both motors and the relay are a black a blue and a red wire, stripped. Any Ideas as to what connectors on the light switch they would connect to?

I just found your site and have subscribed. I have a '76 car also and have done the engine and trans and all the front suspension stuff including a Borgenson steering box upgrade. I watched your video on the clock with amazement at how it worked. It is also on my list to redo. I enjoy your videos and please keep them coming, all of us Corvette owners that work on our cars are always grateful to see what other owners are doing. My headlights still work OK but it is interesting to see how the conversion is done and get some real feedback. I will be watching all your videos, thanks.

Been in the background for a while just watching your videos. Looks like you are every mans drram. Honey! Go out and fix the car. But then you take it(smile). I am sending this becaude you didn't say who made the actuators and how much they cost. By the way i have the Star Trek flight simulator Video game. Hey Happy New Year, and keep those videos coming.

Haha thanks for pointing that out. I just added the link to the kit in the description, which is sold by Eckler's. it's not cheap and took me a while to decide to go ahead with it, but like the new seats I put in my CJ5, I figured it's better to do it now so I can enjoy them rather than put it off. Plus, I kinda didn't want to have to raise and lower them manually. What a pain!

Another well made video. I’m waiting for a replacement fuel pump to arrive for my ‘75. Would be interesting to see how you do that job before I tackle mine. Happy New Year and stay safe.

Thanks, Ron! I am hoping to get the fuel pump done and a video up for next week. Should be straightforward enough, barring any unforeseen problems. We all know how things can take an unexpected turn with these old machines. =) Cheers!

I’m sure you know this with all of your Mechanical background. But I understand that you should rotate the engine to top dead center before pulling the pump out because it’ll make it a lot easier to get that rod back in there when you install your new pump.
@RestorationObsession
@RestorationObsession 3 года назад
@@ronstjohn6780 Yes, I believe you are correct. I seem to recall having read/seen that somewhere. You know there is a bolt hole in the front of the block into which one can gently screw in a bolt for holding that rod in place while changing the pump. That should be an interesting project.

My friend told me about that bolt hole. He was replacing fuel pump on 1974 Chev P/U.

My 77's owners manual recomends driving with head lights up for air flow/cooling.

Say what! That's kinda funny if you think about it... that they recommended doing that as a solution to the overheating problem. HAHA! I'm going to take a gander at my owners manual and see if they say the same thing. Thank you for sharing that, Mark!

Haha thanks. The air quality here is pretty toxic right now though. My guess is it has a small vac leak at the actuator (check that bottom hose) or maybe the mechanism needs a good clean/lube.

Great Job! They do seem to make a lot of noise when the Headlights lock in place...I wonder how they can be quieted down... Well, At least they are no longer robbing vacuum and power from the engine!.....lol.... I had a C3 ('77 Vette..Last year of the good bodystyle and interior) and will again...and the headlights never gave me an issue...but I know that they can be problematic when the rubber seals in the vacuum cannisters dry rot and go bad.. :o) Tony K.

Thanks! I'll put the common rubber feet that they included with the kit on there tomorrow and if it works I'll post the video. If not, I may look further into it. I'd love to find a way to be able to control the speed of the actuators. I'd much prefer them to move slower, maybe take about a second or so. I'm going to look into an idea I have for that to see if it's feasible. If so, I'll share of course. =)

Hey, thanks for the guide. I got corvette with this system already installed, but the motors were shut. I replaced the motors but they won’t go up at the same time and drop them pretty hard. Do you know how to adjust that?
@RestorationObsession
@RestorationObsession 2 года назад
Hi Vitaly! I am not exactly sure how to set the timing on them but I think there are knobs used for adjustment which are set by the factory. Maybe one got turned slightly? You can find the instructions for the actuators online, here for example. Maybe this will help: www.fullthrottlecorvette.com/1968--1982-Corvette-Electric-Headlight-Motor-Conversion-Kit_p_3351.html

Fascinating. That sure does get rid of alot of vacuum issues if you have any with a carburetor. That button that turns the red light on inside, i just wired it to the parking lights; first to go on and last to go off. As for those push fans, I thought of that but couldn't find a push fan that would let me open the hood. haha. Thats alot of amps when all are running plus the AC. Does your stock 76 amp Alternator keep up with amp demand?. I think I spoke of my 86 vette 110 alternator that just bolts up to the 76 with a change in the pulley. Again thanks for the fascinating vid. P.S. I think those plastic bushings are to quiet down the linkage and not actually to keep metal to metal wear down:)
@RestorationObsession
@RestorationObsession 3 года назад
Hey there. Thanks. You know, I hadn't thought about the amp draw, I'll have to research that more and let you know. I'm not sure the ammeter is working correctly. I suspect it make have blown the fusible link I made, so another thing to check. And that makes sense, about the plastic bushings. Btw, they recommend lubricating those parts with zinc-based lube but since there's so much dust here I avoid doing stuff like that because it just gums everything up and turns it into sandpaper, like, literally lol

@@RestorationObsession I tried graphite on all my locks and pivots during preventative maintenance. Gummed up my ignition key so it wouldn't turn; almost left me stranded. Now it's a squirt of WD40 for maintenance. haha cheers!

Nice! Yes, they are very forceful. So much so it makes me not want to use them too much lol. I have not done anything with them since I installed them, but now that you mentioned it I am starting to wonder if there is a way to slow them down or smooth them out or something. If I find anything I will post it.

Hi Ahmet. The actuators are not cheap. They run about $600 or so from what I remember. The kit can be purchased at most of the common Corvette parts suppliers such as Eckler's, Zip and others.

Sorry for the super-late reply, Tyrone, but no. The actuators are triggered by the 12v signal going to the parking lights.
@MrRichard454
@MrRichard454 3 года назад
@@RestorationObsession What happens when you turn on the hazard lights? Do they go up and down?
@RestorationObsession
@RestorationObsession 3 года назад
@@MrRichard454 Haha! No, the parking lights are either on or off with the light switch and the headlight signal wire is connected to the side marker light that doesn't blink. I know, it seems wonky, but that's how the kit says to hook it up. I was thinking of hooking them up to the main headlight signal, but you need to modify the circuit and use diodes to attach both low and high beam 12v signals to the actuators (otherwise, the lights would pop open closed when you change to/from low/high beam). I'll probably do that mod some day, but for now, it's fine. The lights look kinda neat up even with just the parking lights. One of my next mods will be to hook up the LED headlights' DRLs to the parking light signal so when they pop up the DRLs will be lit. Think I'll do that soon =)
