In this video, I overhaul the C6 Valvebody and install it into the transmission. I point out a common issue with the 1-2 accumulator springs that often break. After I install the valvebody, I show how you can "air check" the shift valves. Thanks for watching.

For a free/cheap c6 shift kit,,,, For the 1-2 accumulator;;; remove the factory springs, install 14 penny's in the bore to block the accumulator piston from moving. Results is a very firm 1-2 shift. Most shift kits will have you block the top valve and the bottom valve from moving with a 1/4 checkball. The top valve is the cutback valve, Remove the cut back valve from the bore,, Install the 1/4 ball into the bore ,,,then install the cutback valve into the bore. The bottom valve is the servo modulator valve,,remove the stock spring,,then install a plug or check ball to keep the valve from moving,, The plug or check ball can not sit above the bore opening,,,when bolting the plate back on!!!!! And some shift kit instructions have you remove the 2-3 check ball for the street/strip/racing version of the kit to give it a firm 2-3 shift. Free shift kit!!! Also you can use a couple of dodge small front pump washers to shim the pressure regulator valve,,put the washers under the spring seat.. The dodge washers can be used in that manner in many transmissions

@@GaryFerraro those shift kit (tips) Are basically the same thing as a B+M transpack shift kit instructions. No need to buy a shift kit,, Those are the instructions!!!! Look it up!!

Hi Gary, at the 10 minute mark you dropped in the intermediate servo accumulator valve with the springs..In my ford service manual showing the exploded view of all these valves, that this accumulator valve is NOT used in police,fleet or taxi units..Also on some of these transmission forums, they replace the springs to the valve with pennys!!..Just to lock up the valve so that there is no action on it.. What are your thoughts on that??

what rebuild kit would you recommend. and are all kits for the c6 the same considering the different types of housings?

Hey Gary, thanks for taking the time to make and share these videos. I have always wanted to try doing a tranny rebuild, but watching your videos both encourages and discourages me at the same time lol. Would a C6 be a good transmission for a first attempt at a rebuild since they are a relatively basic design or something to be avoided by a beginner? Also, what was the blue stuff you put between the plate and gasket?

C6 is fairly easy to do also a 700R4 is a more common one. The blue grease is a special transmission grease that melts when the trans heats up, other high temp grease will not melt and possibly get stuck in the filter. The blue grease is called trans lube or Assembly Goo, it's made by Dr. Tranny or I think a company called Lube Guard

@@GaryFerraro Thanks for your reply. My friend has an early 80's Ford truck that has a bad C6 transmission which is why I asked about it. I had actually searched your videos for a C6 just a couple of weeks before you posted one so I was really happy when I saw it appear.

Torque wrenches are not accurate if you don't hold them by the handle. The valve body through bolts in the video were under torqued due to the shorter arm between your hand and the drive head, even though it clicked.

Can the valve body be worked on without pulling the tranny? I just had my c6 overhauled and it seems like 3rd gear does not engage properly. It feels as though the truck is fighting itself when trying to accelerate. However, when I adjust the shifter to a position between N and D, I dont have the issue. It feels as though the manual valve is not lining up correctly, because I can't shift it into 1st either, the shifter arm hits valve body.

yes, valvebody can be dropped, make sure vacuum is good at modulator

Hello Gary, Here to learn how to rebuild my C6 off my 1971 Ford LTD. When the car is put in D, it doesn't move forward when cold. When I let it warm up, it drives perfectly, shifts smoothly. Also noticed very large amounts of transmission fluid on the floor when parked a long time. Do you think I need a full rebuild? Any idea what seal/o ring might be faulty?

You probably have hard seals in the forward clutch drum

Hi Gary, how different is my C-6 manual reverse valve body? It shifts 1-2-1, 3rd is 1st now. Linkage adjusted and looks right. Trans was well maintained, nice clean oil at proper level new filter/gasket. Any Ideas Gary, or anyone please? Thank you in advance for any feedback. Cheers from Motown.

From your experience with C6 transmissions is this usually the fix for one that won't go into 3rd? I've got an 87 f150 with 56,000 miles that had sat for about 8 years, so when I bought it I flushed out the transmission fluid and it ran good for a while then all the sudden no 3rd gear....what would be your approach in fixing it? thanks

@@GaryFerraro Reverse, 1st and 2nd work perfect....I've changed the output and abs sensors on it and am about to change the modulator.....could a sticking governor be the issue as well? thanks for the reply.

Hello Gary thanks for this great and informative video. I have a question about a problem I'm having with my 69 mustang C6. It does drive but it starts off in 3rd gear when I put it in drive. When I put it in manual second gear it feels like the parking brake is on and slows down. When I manually shift it to 1st gear it locks up and skids to a stop. Could this be valve body related?

very possible, sounds like a cross leak, was any work done before this happened? how is reverse?

@@GaryFerraro thank you for your response. A friend of mine had recently done a fluid change and may have used multi purpose atf instead of type F. The reverse works perfectly. It has happened before and then started working again out of nowhere for a couple days, but after a little bit of spirited driving it returned to the same condition.

I was doing a little work on it yesterday and realized that at the time of lock up when I put the shifter in 1st that the car is engaging reverse and first at the same time because it rolls backwards a few inches then skids to a stop. When I put it in reverse it works flawlessly.

Do those valves get so worn that you can replace them? Is there a replacement kit available ? I have a 69 C6 the filter is flat I see yours is a little different it comes down more I had a really quick shift from first to second I'm wondering if the valve was getting stuck some had alot of visual wear on them .

@@GaryFerraro the 2nd to 3rd is around 25 maybe close to 30. mph I ) I tried ajusting the modulator Its all the way in I have a 2bbl on it now my vacuum was around 12/13 in drive around 19-21 in park in drive I'm at 600/650 rpm trans was rebuilt only 3,000 miles after Install it always did it not sure before I bought the truck used and it ran for 20 min and had to tow it home .I'm hooked up to manifold vacuum I tried the hose on carb full vacuum didn't change anything I just did a transgo shift kit my first one I checked the valve behind modulator to see if it was stuck also tried longer pins never helped I'm thinking I have a vacuum leak or the hose is too big and it's getting too much vacuum? not sure I shifted it manually sice was like taking off in 2nd it shifted 1st .....,2nd that quick

How do you know what valve modulator you need for the c6? How can I k know what year is my c6 transmission?

Sometimes there is a year on a tag, it's just 2 digits, like a 1979 trans would say 79, What is it going in car or truck? gas or diesel?

I think the early ones did not use the 3-2 downshift solenoid. They started with the 4L60E in 1993
