I suppose its just an area that I need to continue building up a profile for. Its funny that I have done one Neo Geo mini video and I constantly receive offers of reviewing console hardware on the back of it (though I dont take up the offers) but when it comes to the C64, the channel does not attract hardware makers.

I really hope that Miner 2019er will use the game mechanics of Bounty Bob Strikes Back - especially jumping, as it was much more fun to control the jump a little bit instead of the stiff jumping in Miner 2049er…

It looks like that 2019er will be focusing on 2049er mechanics but you never know - the developer may be inspired to add more options based on community feedback.

it makes me happy to see all these new games being made for the old C64, some of them look amazing, almost hard to believe they're running on a C64. I would love to see turn based strategy games like Lazer squad, I hope someone gets inspired and makes something with that format.
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo 3 года назад
What sort of game design are you thinking? I feel that for turn based, design is the most time consuming aspect, especially if the graphics are relatively simplified (even ASCII is possible).
@Liquidcadmus
@Liquidcadmus 3 года назад
@@IsaacKuo have you ever played lazer squad? it's a grid, turn based game. lots of fun, it would be great to see what modern creators can do with that idea and using the full potential of the C64.
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo 3 года назад
@@Liquidcadmus I'm not sure if I played it, but there was a good C64 version, right? I suppose graphics could be improved using sprite underlay modes and such. The big challenges, though, remain mechanics design, level design, and AI. You need to get those things just right in order for the game to be fun. Whether or not the graphics are advanced is almost immaterial compared to that.
@Liquidcadmus
@Liquidcadmus 3 года назад
@@IsaacKuo yeah, the c64 version was great. it got me into turn based strategy gaming. I am sure someone nowadays could do something amazing with the same type of idea
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo 3 года назад
@@Liquidcadmus Well, I have been thinking of doing something similar to Syndicate, but with a fantasy theme. It could be turn based rather than realtime. See, I've been working on a subpixel interlace scrolling effect to boost resolution to something like 640x400. But there's no way for the C64 to do real interlacing - I have to fake it by slowly scrolling the view. For this game, the view is from an eagle familiar, scrolling your view diagonally along a diamond path. I mean ... that's just weird without some sort of excuse for it. Anyway, the view from an eagle or drone makes sense for a game like Syndicate. But the game itself doesn't need to be real time. It could be turn based. With these subpixel graphics, each 8x8 character tile has 16x20 subpixels - enough for each character to have Ultima-like character graphics.

It is not available yet. Based on feedback from the preview, the coder has decided to improve the game further by introducing a 'casual' mode difficulty and improving some of the graphics/animations.

So Miner 2019er has a timer per level? If so it's sadly a deal-breaker for me. I like to ponder. :-)

The timer is only for bons points allocation. You are free to take as long as you need to complete a level in 2019er.

I wish modern C64 programmers would realize how much we have gotten spoiled from modern gaming, and that saving your progress is taken for granted nowadays. Level passwords would be appreciated. Heck, games like Chip's Challenge already had them back in the day. Sorry for the rant. Some good news this month. MIner looks fun but if it's as difficult as Bounty Bob then I'll decline. The joypad is a good idea, but my brain is hardwired to using Atari style joysticks. Goblin has great presentation, but overall looks like a faster version of Bear Essentials. Sarah Jane Avory is singular. I'm really looking forward to trying Lost Realms. A randomly generated Pac-Man sounds intriguing, but this is a game style that has never managed to keep me interested for long. The one Pac-Man game that I really wanted to see completed was Protovision's Pac It, but it appears to be abandoned.

Personally, I don't have nostalgia for the look of Miner 2049er. I just always found its look ugly compared to other platformers of the time. It's not that Jumpman or Hard Hat Mack were more technically impressive, they just looked more aesthetically pleasing to me. That said, I'm not sure trying to enhance the graphics makes sense ... the look of that main character sprite is very distinctive, even if I personally find it ugly.
@danielnicholson6174
@danielnicholson6174 3 года назад
It looks much more like an Atari 2600 game than a c64 game.
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo 3 года назад
@@danielnicholson6174 Miner 2049er was originally developed for Atari 8-bit, which had similar sprites to the Atari 2600 (8 pixel wide, one color per scanline). That's why it looks similar to the Atari 2600 that way. However, the background graphics are more sophisticated than the Atari 2600. These background graphics were pretty simplistic though, and didn't really take full advantage of what the Atari 8-bits could do.
@RetroGamerNation
@RetroGamerNation 3 года назад
I would hold a similar view in respect to nostalgia for old school graphics. I am comfortable to accept it for 2019er because its an intentional part of the design rather than a limitation of the coders skill. And like you stated, I don't think it makes sense to enhance the graphics for this title.
@ghenghiskhan9473
@ghenghiskhan9473 3 года назад
Used to play 2049er as a kid on my Atari 800xl. Sure graphics are pretty basic but the gameplay is what makes it addictive. I don't care about this BS arguments of graphics. Yes C64 has nicer graphics but horrible color pallet. Amstrad CPCs had nice colors but sometimes the scrolling wasn't always great. Each machine had it's own charm and to this day I have all these machines and more and each one I use to play different titles that they were good at showcasing. To me Atari will always be my favorite as I grew up with it and still have boxed titles from the 80s. Any kind of graphic enhancements would be sacrilege to 2049er. 8 bit gaming is about using your imagination, which most modern gamers don't really have as they are retarded and want flash graphics to fill in the things their tiny minds can't imagine!
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo 3 года назад
@@ghenghiskhan9473 Well okay, but 8 bit retro _development_ is about using your imagination to push the possible experience. One way to push the possible experience is with graphics. A big reason the C64 has been so hot for developers is that its weird graphics hardware can be used in bizarre unanticipated ways. It's fun to figure out new ways to utilize the hardware. The Atari 8-bits also have hardware which can be used in unanticipated ways, even if it's not to the same level as the wacky C64. Other platforms are often more straightforward and/or inflexible. I get that a lot of retro gamers prefer to stick with classic software, and have little interest in modern retro releases. That's cool, if that's what you like. But obviously developers making modern retro software for classic platforms have different interests and motivations.

Crazy that Lost Realms Of Murkasada is keyboard only, forcing keystrokes on vintage equipment. Trogue is the same, both completely unplayable with a joystick, what were they and the testers thinking ? Both games look ok but get a zero.
