I've driven this road a few times. Either on vacation or relocating. Last time through, 2010, my GPS wanted me to go down to LA and hookup with 10 East from there. I laughed and got on CA-58, knowing it meets up with I-40 in Barstow. Maybe one of these days they will extend I-40 officially to Bakersfield. Such a purdy ride up/down 58!! Cool video!!
Couldn't even begin to recall how many times I've driven this. Growing up out on the high desert, going to college in Bakersfield. Rain, fog, snow, wind, good times. The semi truck traffic here can be astounding. (Last time i looked, Broome Road 7:33 is _not_ an access to the Loop. A private ranch road.)
They are also updating SR-46 from I-5 to US 101 in Paso Robles to be the end of I-40. No plans to take the final 30 miles to SR-1 to make it a true coast to coast interstate
Going to Mammoth Lakes? Looks like you're planning on remaking videos you previous done on both CA route 14 & US 395 yesteryear. Hope you enjoyed your 3 day trip with your grandpa.
Done that route a few times while there were storms up in 88 and 50 from Mammoth to the San Joaquin Valley, that route is as a last minute route, 7 hrs thru there but definitely a good choice last minute if the passes up north are closed
There’s a very good German bakery in Tehachapi…..Kohnen’s Country Bakery. Take the main Tehachapi exit, which I think is signed as Business 58, follow it to just around the train station. Always stop by there on the way to and from Vegas (from the Bay Area). We pick up lunch (good sandwiches) to eat either near Barstow on the way to Vegas or on the Autobahn (I5) on the way back.
Great to see you filming this road. I enjoyed driving and filming it in 2020. So glad to hear that Caltrans is finally adding truck climbing lanes. 'Bout time they did this!
There's an upcoming project that will widen the eastbound direction from 2 to 3 lanes right as the climb up the mountains begin. Also, at 11:11, that's what known as a phantom traffic jam, and can be caused by unnecessary, rapid braking, an animal running across the road, or even people changing lanes unsafely.
I've traveled that stretch many times, and the drive through the narrow section is always nail-biting. In order for the 58 to get full freeway status, they need to build a couple of over/under passes (Hwy 223 & Caliente Rd, specifically), create a truck lane in each direction (space permitting), and do a repaving job as well. Other than that, the route is pretty much sound and ready to go.
I drove through there heading to Victorville the day after Memorial Day. My mom and I left Sacramento then picked up my aunt in Elk Grove to bring my aunt in Victorville who moved in with me.
Nice video, Kyle. 58 was recommended twice for Interstate status: once in '56 and again in '68, and rejected both times. It's not just the 223 junction and the Caliente turnoff a mile east, but there's some intersections east of Mojave (including the California City Blvd turnoff), and some east of 395 in SBD County, that would have to be upgraded or otherwise dealt with before I-40 signs could go up. I drive this road every time I head to Dallas, and once you get past of Mojave, it's easy to drop the hammer and go just a bit over the limit.... CHP assigns rookies out of the CHP Academy often to Mojave to get their feet wet and they make a lot of stops for speeding! There's a decent airliner boneyard at Mojave Airport: their equivalent of the big AF boneyard at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona...easy to see from 58 if you can.
If Interstate 40 does get extended west to I-5, the control cities should be as follows Eastbound: Bakersfield/Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Flagstaff Westbound: Los Angeles, Bakersfield, San Francisco
Those are expectations. Here is the reality knowing Caltrans. Eastbound: Bakersfield, Tehachapi (like it already is) Mojave, Barstow, and Needles. I don’t see Las Vegas being on anything but I-15.
@interstatekyle. It is to bad that you have to speed through the video just to get a view. I would enjoy this so much more it you didn't run it at three times the speed. I guess I can't watch any more because viewing it makes me uncomfortable. To bad because I love the locations that you cover.
I’m not changing the format of my videos. Been doing it this way for 12 years. Sorry but real time speed is incredibly boring to sit through and watch.
