So sad that this line closed. Generations from Limerick / Cork / Waterford used this route to get to Fishguard, rather than go via Dublin (or then Dun Laoghaire) to Holyhead. A really useful link, sadly run down, till no one used it. Great video. Thanks.
Reopening closed railway lines would prevent Pollution, Car Accidents, Road Deaths & Traffic Jams all over the island of Ireland it's working I am sure overseas.
@@martinwalsh3228 I agree, but unfortunately neither Irish Rail or successive governments seem to be interested in creating a decent rail service outside of Dublin. And then they wonder why not many use the train.
Whereabouts was Kilrane station? Cos as far as I can tell, the closest point the train line goes to Kilrane village is up by Carragh Lodge B&B nearly a kilometre away. Or was the station at Rosslare Harbour called Kilrane before Rosslare Harbour village was fully established?
When the Innisfallen was fully booked or not sailing from Cork that day -- it sailed on alternate days to Fishguard -- this was the way my parents sent me. One year I sailed to Fishguard from Waterford . Either way having to get off the ships at Fishguard in the we small hours was grim. I think that the formation is still in place and sleepers and track are also. The bridge over the River Barrow may be the achilles heel.
@@vicsams4431 . The French tend to leave the track in place after a line is closed if only to maintain the right of way and deter opportunistic trespassers. It's worth doing the same unless the Barrow Brodge is beyond economic repair. I think that I read that there is the occasional train on this line if only for weedkilling .
@@tomcarr1358 Ireland was well known for keeping the track in situ, after closure. But sometimes they plain-lined the connecting track points at the junction. Their policy was to leave for 20 or 30 years, but time flies so fast. I have done Rosslare Harbour Pier to Waterford, Athenry to Claremorris via Tuam (now lifted), Limerick to Athenry (before it reopened), Limerick to Foynes, and Mullingar to Athlone. French lines I have done before closure include Calais Maritime, Boulogne Maritime and Dieppe Maritime.
@@briank10101 That is good news for the local people and the local economy. I had heard it was to be freight only again. But it would be nice if it was a passenger service, for commuters working in Limerick City that don't want to drive or take the bus.
A few times, I used to go down to Wellington Bridge or Rosslare Harbour from Limerick on Saturday evenings. I really miss that line. Waterford is still possible with a change at Limerick Junction but for how long more? Great video. You can see they were skimping on weed spray in the mid 1990s.
From Rob Mannion. My mistake...I've just realised that I wrote my last comment before Wellington Bridge had been reached....a healthy stock of beet wagons and plenty of sidings in use at the 'real' Wellington Bridge. I must be getting old...memory failing., regards, Rob.
Many thanks Gerry! Your video has brought many memories back for me. When was this filmed please? I couldn't see the sugar beet shunting unit and the beet sidings at Wellington Bridge seemed to be lifted...so perhaps it's well after the last beet train ran? I only hope CIE keep their plans to keep the route 'fettled ' on a care and maintenance basis. I much enjoy your videos. Thanks. Rob
Rob Mannion ah the vaunted CIE care and maintenance plan. Midleton to youghal is under a care and maintenance plan. I'd hate to see it if it wasn't been looked after.
Anyone know the name of the old station at 16:20? I hear one of the lads in the video saying it was used for beet, but there seems to be little record of it
