In this video, I compare 8 cab sim pedals/devices.
I give a quick sound sample of each emulating a 4x12 cabinet.
I also give the latency results, I found for each pedal/device.
00:17 - Hughes & Kettner RedBox MKII (0 ms delay)
00:37 - Joyo JDI-01 (0 ms delay)
00:57 - Digitech CabDryVR (5 ms delay)
01:17 - Flamma FS07 CAB (1 ms delay)
01:37 - Two Notes CAB M+ (3 ms delay)
01:57 - Hotone Xtomp mini (3 ms delay)
02:17 - Sonicake Sonic IR (9 ms delay)
02:38 - Behringer Ultra-G (0 ms delay)

Great video! Do you have any info on how much the Flamma truncates the IRs? 1ms seems incredibly low turnaround time, that is typically just what the AD/DA converters take to do their work. BTW from my own measurements: Mooer Radar - latency about 2ms, can load 1024 samples of an IR Atomic Amplifirebox - latency around 2ms, can load 1024 samples IRs Digitech GSP1101 - latency around 1.5ms (loop bypassed), can only load up to 256 samples in mono and 128 in stereo There are also other variants from Nux, Joyo, Hotone, or even AMT etc.and I guess they are about the same, but still would be interesting to compare them, if anyone has done the measurements.

I’ve not run across any information that talks about how much Flammable truncates the IR. You know of any way I can measure that or see that data? Thanks for sharing your measurements, very cool. Just curious, do you have a preferred IR pedal?
@Scorstin
@Scorstin 3 года назад
@@Tone-Quest not sure how to measure that, other than comparing identical IR loaded into the Flamma and DAW plugin that allows altering the IR samples (like NadIR) , with an identical music loop. In my experience though, the difference is very subtle beyond 512 samples. I only measured the latency in the above mentioned pedals, sample length info comes from official documentation. My favourite is definitely the Amplifirebox, as it contains awesome amp sims, plus some useful effects and eq, all in one box. Been using it live a lot recently too, with great results.

That was really interesting and very useful - thank you! I am interested in the Flamma FS07 which brought me to your comparison. I have the Joyo JDI-01 and think it kind of sounds OK, but nothing outstanding. Here, though, it seems to stand up quite well in comparison - and it is very reasonably priced. The biggest issue I have with the Joyo is that there is no level control/boost as it is, no doubt, meant as a DI and not a preamp.

Cool video. Amazing how even a JOYO box can sound better than the Torpedo CAB SIM. I had a Le Crunch Preamp & DI, and I always felt that the brand was overrated, poorly developed, poor sounds, noisy as hell, expensive. Never again with Two Notes.

@@hey0mcfly Probably the "Torpedo CAB" per se can be tweaked a lot and sound good. However I had a very bad experience with a Le Crunch Preamp (TWO Notes as well) and it was probably the most expensive and bad sounding pedal I've ever tried in my whole life. I was impressed by the joyo because my le crunch never sounded half or 10% as good as the JOYO. And I spent around $299 for that unit.

I have the Flamma, it's not as good as the Digitech or TresCab from Mooer. I also have the Flamma preamp, and it says on the bottom that it is from Mooer, so i guess they made it, Mooer does make some nice things, but it's never exceptionally good like some things from Nux (Trident) or Boss (ME90). But, the nice thing about the Flamma is that you can load your own IR's and still have low latency, that makes up for the quality. They should have made more tone control on it instead of only having low and high cut.

Hi, if I only need to choose one which is more essential to the pedalboard that will go well with an overdrive & distortion pedal, is it the cabinet simulator or an amp simulator? Also, do both sim need a DI pedal? Sorry, I'm still a newbie on the pedal world. Thank you.
@Tone-Quest
@Tone-Quest Год назад
Unfortunately, I would say it depends. I would say in the past, most pedalboards were made up of boosts, overdrives, distortions, modulations, delays and reverbs. Generally speaking boosts, overdrives, distortions pedals went into the front of an amp and time based effects (modulations, delays and reverbs) went into the effects loop, provided the amp had one but if by chance you are trying to build an ampless pedalboard that is going to plug directly into a PA or directly into an audio interface for recording then I would say that the amp simulator pedal is probably more important. The reasoning behind that is, that most amp sim pedals also come with cabinet simulation built into it. Cabinet sim pedals are ususally handy if you want more control over your cabinets or possibly the ability to import your own impulse responses. I hope that helps a little. Feel free to ask more questions, if any of that is unclear. Cheers.

@@Tone-Quest I see. I have a minimalist pedalboard (w/ od, distortion, EQ, chorus, delay) which i connect to my practice amp. I'm just thinking if i need to add a cab or amp sim pedal since I like the sound of a marshall amp. Thanks for your help and reply Chris, subscribed. Happy Holidays 🍻
@Tone-Quest
@Tone-Quest Год назад
@@daejumong4386 Since you are using a cabinet/speaker a cab sim is not needed. An amp sim pedal can be used as essentially an overdrive/distortion pedal but if using it that way, I would recommend not using the cab sim that is normally built-in to most amp sim pedals. In your current setup it might be cheaper and possibly simpler to find a distortion pedal that is based on that Marshall amp sound but that is just a suggestion. The beauty of a pedalboard is that there is no wrong way to build one as long as you like the sounds.

@@Tone-Quest im a bit more curious about the pedal order. Ive not used an ir pedal, but reverb is trying to recreate the sound of a room. In this case, u had the chance to place the "speaker" inside the "room" by placing the ir before the reverb. Im curious how that wouldve sounded.

@jul3249
@jul3249 Год назад
@@AlvarockB Latency is the amount of time it takes from the moment you pluck your strings to the moment the plugin/pedal/instrument actually produces a sound. Anything above 12-15 milliseconds is unacceptable for anything that requires precision because you definitely notice it and it throws you off in terms of groove. Doesn't affect the sound tho. Hope it helps.

@jul3249
@jul3249 Год назад
@@AlvarockB well, someone has mentioned that they didn't think 9ms was that bad, so I guess I depends. I know that I am extremely sensitive to latency, and just the thought of maybe noticing a little delay is enough to throw me off, make me hyper vigilant about it and kill my mood. But maybe I'm overly sensitive. What you can do to test it is use a software like Protools, logic or even garageband and play through a slap delay effect where you can precisely set the time, make it 100% wet so you only have the delayed signal and non of the original, and see how it feels. If you play at 9ms and don't feel anything bothering, you know you're good.
