Their's duet is the best ever. I like the voice of Montserrat for not only its technique possibilities but for its beauty, passion and of caurse for her manner of performance.
At this point, Caballe had been singing professionally for more than thirty years. I think Caballe and Horne's voices blend so beautifully. Sutherland and Caballe are currently tied as my favorite sopranos.
Twee giganten van de opera. Prachtig. Ik vind Marilyn Horne de beste mezzosopraan die er is geweest. En nu geeft ze les in de Music Academy of the West.
@BeauTenor That was in 1960 I believe at San Francisco after she sang it in Germany. I have a recording of her singing Brunehilda's immolation from the early 70s. She still has plenty of voice left at age 76, though she no longer sings classical music and rarely sings in public.
Funny you say that, because she did consider learning Norma and she almost performed Semiramide. After singing Norma's entrance she said she felt like she just finished an entire opera. No Normas for her. As far as Semiramide, she was schedulued to sing a concert version of it, but had to withdraw as she was pregnant. She was replaced by Caballe (mid 60s I think). Glad you like her so much. As you can tell Ms Horne is my favorite singer of all time. Fantastic singer, teacher and person.
There's a 'complete' performance (audio & video) with these two. It's fabulous. Yes- here it's a little late. Listen to the other one. It is fanfukintastic. Trust me. Would I lie to you?
Don't you just have to love Montserrat Caballe? She was interviewed after she recorded "Barcelona" with Freddy Mercury and she said all the young Queen fans were asking: "Who is the fat lady who screams so much?" lol
You don't have to be in the opera world to like something or not. And I'm not so sure if my ear is so untrained if I started learning classical piano at 3.5 years old and was in the ballet world (where they like classical music) all my life. Please listen to the Devia/Podles version on You Tube and let me know what you think.
haha she still hasnt retired, that was 20 years ago, shes 75 now i believe, and still performing. I dont think she sings intricate coloratura roles like this anylonger, however.
I am looking for the first aria sang by Ms. Caballe on this Austrian/Swiss/German production with her and Marilyn Horne. Please could you tell me what the first aria was entitled. Please, please
I just have to wonder if going through Marliyn's head is "GOD, I miss Joan!!" Yes, Caballe was good in her prime, but nobody beats Sutherland in this role -- let alone the perfect harmonizing she and Horne did!
