‘The only thing I could control was my imagination’: Step inside the captivating Connecticut home of antiquarian, collector and designer, Michael Trapp, a master of his art whose theatrical, museum-worthy home in West Cornwall is both his refuge, and a reflection of his singular vision and limitless imagination. Michael guides us through his incredible spaces and collections, while sharing his creative process and fascinating life story with honesty and candour. ‘People think I come from some sophisticated stock or whatever,’ he smiles. ‘No one really knows what’s in your past.’

Full circle. ... parents say were movig dont make friends, then describing object attachment in beauty, ending with non attachment to object and that people are important. Beautiful.

As a kid with my family we lived in a small village in a wooden hut with no electrics or water, just an outside pump and a pail in a shed as a toilet. We also sometimes stayed with my grandmother in a room where there temperature was 5°c and no heating. Later we were given social housing in a terrible state with a dead horse in the yard but we fixed it up. I used to collect antiques from the local dump, where in the 60's people got rid of 'old stuff', the stuff I loved instinctively. My brother had posters of rock stars on his wall and I had 18th century prints. Today I live in a huge old mansion surrounded by antiques and art and I spend my days restoring stuff. Sometimes your taste and dreams are in direct oppostion to what you knew growing up and for me that makes it more valuable.

It's so strange, I was in the kitchen a couple of hours ago and it suddenly struck me that I simply EXPECTED water to come out of the tap when I turned it on. I thought; "What if there WAS NO WATER?" and I had this sudden rush of gratitude for every bit of comfort that I daily take for granted. It's important. There are countries where running water is a luxury. The saddest thing is to be filthy rich and unaware of it.

I feel the same way. I grew up poor, lacking so much. We moved each year. There was so sense of security. So I appreciate every little thing, and creating a beautiful home is very important to me. And what I decorate my home with doesn’t need to be expensive or have a pedigree. It’s how you put them together.

I wasn't expecting to be so moved and brought to tears... I follow his account on Instagram and love his style, but I had no idea who the man behind it was. I admit I assumed he came from a lineage of wealthy Connecticut people. I also love being surrounded by beautiful things in my home, things found in nature and vintage shops. They say, Never meet your heroes but in this case, I am so glad I did!

I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation! Mr. Trapp has the diction of a brilliant psychiatrist and the eye of a museum curator, made all the more extraordinary by a humility rarely seen today. His voice, calm, assuring, and welcoming, was a pleasant introduction to his creative process. THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY to experience a cross section of your remarkable world!

This man is a class act, not by the objects he owns, though, they are beautiful, but by his attitude and approach. His life experiences resonate, if you hear them ❤

I have lived a life of Uber-wealth & minus banking accounts : so , a foot in both worlds . This has given me such a glorious understanding & view of what interior beauty not only is ; but , what it could be . This is it. A world of pure joy.

I have an odd affinity for broken or damaged objects. It’s strange, even to me, but I believe it comes from being financially poor during the formative early years.

The conversation was just as mesmerizing as the space. The wonder and the imagination of everything. Drama + intentionality dancing simultaneously, then stopping to quietness. Beautifully enchanting.🤍🫶🏽
